Lucas and Nathan get into a fight during a road game and Brooke is injured in the off-court melee, so Whitey throws the boys off the bus during the ride home. Lucas, Keith and Karen attend Dan and Deb's annual basketball appreciation party; and Haley admits to Lucas that she's starting to like Nathan. Elsewhere, Brooke tries to get Nathan and Peyton back together so she can have Lucas all to herself. Deb: Barbara Alyn Woods.
Nathan and Haley go on a date arranged by Brooke. Elsewhere, Peyton gets into trouble when she meets a sleazy guy (Mike Erwin) at a college party; and Karen gets an invitation to attend a six-week cooking class in Florence, but she's torn between going to Italy and staying home to take care of Lucas and her café.
Nathan takes drugs to get an edge in his next hoops game. Also: Peyton befriends an artistic but emotionally troubled foster child; Lucas and Brooke go out on a wild date; and Dan has trouble accepting that Deb is working at Karen's café.
Lucas decides if he wants to date Brooke or Peyton. Elsewhere, Whitey cancels practice to help the team refocus; Dan takes Nathan on a weekend outing in an attempt to reconcile with his wife and son; and Deb and Haley plan an open-mike night at the cafe.
During a therapy session with his family, Nathan realizes that he may want to stop playing basketball. Elsewhere, Brooke looks for a way to better connect with Lucas and asks Peyton for advice; and Peyton is thrilled to have her father home from a long business trip, but agonizes over him leaving again.
Dan's parents (Gerald McRaney, Tess Harper) are in town to celebrate his birthday with him and his family, but they don't know that he and Deb are separated. Elsewhere, Peyton gets word that her dad may have been in a serious accident.
Lucas and Peyton find they can no longer hide their feelings for each other, but they don't have the heart to break it to Brooke. Elsewhere, Haley frets over failing gym class and asks Nathan for help; Keith anxiously awaits Karen's return home; Whitey questions his desire to continue coaching.
Karen is angry at Keith for causing the car accident, and he realizes he may have ruined his chances of starting a relationship with her. Meanwhile, Haley feels guilty about her last fight with Lucas and can't bring herself to visit him in the hospital.
Lucas breaks up with Brooke, but doesn't tell her about his feelings for Peyton. Elsewhere, the drama of Deb and Dan's separation intensifies; and Nathan learns he has the right to choose which parent he wants to live with.
Grammy-winning singer Sheryl Crow appears as herself and performs. Also: Dan buys Nathan a car to try to win his loyalty; Lucas meets a fun-loving female college student (Emmanuelle Vaugier) at a bar; and Dan offers to buy Keith's garage, claiming he wants to help him avoid financial ruin.
Tensions run high on a weekend trip to a basketball tournament when Lucas has to share a hotel room with Nathan and Brooke is forced to room with Peyton. Meanwhile, the cheerleading squad needs a temporary substitute and gets an unlikely replacement; Karen starts to patch things up with Keith.
When members of the basketball team participate in a bachelor auction, Haley urges Peyton to bid on Nathan to keep him away from other girls. Meanwhile, Haley wins a night with Lucas, while Brooke chooses Mouth, the last bachelor remaining.
Peyton is tired of apologizing to Brooke and tells her their friendship is officially over. Elsewhere, Haley plans a party for Nathan; Keith gets a teaching interview in Charleston, N.C.; and Nathan gets a job at the mall after he's forced to give Dan the money he got for selling his car. Lucas learns that Dan wanted joint custody of him when he was a child, but that Karen decided against it. Elsewhere, a substitute coach fills in for Whitey, whose eye surgery causes him to miss the team's first playoff game; and Brooke and Peyton spend the day together to try to patch up their relationship, but things go horribly awry.
Dan's at the coaching helm as Lucas and Nathan compete in the playoffs for a shot at the state championship game. Meanwhile, Brooke betrays Peyton's trust; Haley decides she's ready to sleep with Nathan; and Deb makes her divorce official.
