One Tree Hill Episode Recap: "Nobody Taught Us to Quit" Season 8, Episode 5

Who would've thought that Brooke and Nathan would have so much in common? On this week's episode, both had to give up the thing they love most.

Julian has started his next project, a documentary about what comes next. As Brooke talks to his camera, she explains that she's giving up her entire fortune in order to pay back her company's investors who lost their money. "Why do it?" Julian asks. "It's the right thing to do," she responds. Unfortunately her mother doesn't feel the same way. Brooke visits her in jail to break the news that she's selling the company and Victoria fires back, "I leave you alone for a few days and you go back to that stupid girl who follows her heart." She follows up by telling Brooke to never visit her again.

Nathan visits Clay at the hospital and finally tells him that he's decided to quit basketball. To Nate's delight, Clay, his agent, is nothing but supportive. Clay's old employers, on the other hand, try to tell Nathan he can't lose his contract. So Nate comes up with a new idea: to partner up with Clay. Nathan doesn't want Clay losing any of his clients to IAC and since Clay is currently unable to work, Nathan will hustle for him. Sounds like the perfect career move for Nathan since representing athletes is the next best thing to being one.

Alex and Chase are still hot and heavy, which isn't helping Mia's sanity. In order to get away, Haley tells her she's booking her in a show away from Tree Hill. Portland perhaps? But the honeymoon phase soon ends, when Chase discovers Alex has taken a new film without telling him. To make matters worse, her new role is that of a hot bartender. Clearly she took the job at Tric for "research," which makes Chase think their relationship was all a lie.

Julian comes home and finds Brooke throwing out all the wedding ideas she had collected, but can no longer afford. "You make sad look beautiful, Brooke Davis," Julian says. I love them together. Julian makes Brooke realize that she made the right decision about the company and should stand up to her mother. So she goes back to the jail cell and does just that. "I understand business, but I also understand what's fair and what's right and what's honorable. If you don't, it doesn't matter to me," she says. Brooke tells her mother that if she can't accept her decision, then she will be out of her life forever. "What comes next is up to you," Brooke says.

Quinn joins Clay as he's finally ready to leave the hospital. The staff claps as he exits, and little Jamie throws confetti. They walk into the bedroom where they were shot and Quinn says, "We're going to be OK."

The episode ends with both Nathan and Brooke holding press conferences about their decisions. With Haley and Jamie by his side, Nathan announces he's leaving the game of basketball. Instead of taking questions, he says he'll be conducting a long interview on Mouth's (new) website. Brooke says she plans to pay back her investors in full, as Victoria watches from the jail cell. "For now, I say goodbye to this chapter in my life," they both say. "I look forward to what comes next."
