One Life's Michael Easton Bares His Dark Soul

Soul Stealer cover art courtesy Christopher Shy, Michael Easton by Marina Chavez/ABC

For how much longer can One Life to Live hang on to its top male star? On June 27–28 Michael Easton — who plays crimefighter John McBain — will officially launch a new career when he appears at the Wizard World fan convention in Chicago with his first graphic novel, Soul Stealer (DMF Comics). (Check out the cover here.) It won't hit bookstores until July 1, but early copies are circulating in Hollywood, and Easton has already had meetings with producers eager to put Soul Stealer in your multiplex."I've been thinking strongly about moving to the other side of the business," Easton says. "It's getting to the point where, as a grown man, I'm finding it strange to put on a costume and makeup every day."Five years in the making, Soul Stealer is no ordinary comic book. The lavish 148-page epic—about a 3,000-year-old, love-tortured superhero who has the power to bring back souls from heaven or hell—has haunting artwork by comics giant Christopher Shy (Pathfinder) a... read more

Snoop Dogg Guest Stars on One Life to Live

Um, yeah. So, apparently the D-O-Double G is looking to expand his horizons by working on his acting skills for the small screens. But instead of starring in his own reality show, the rap star is guesting on the hit soap opera, One Life to Live, both today and tomorrow. Clearly, we know you're all thinking Snoop took this role because he's such a huge One Life groupie. But to the contrary, the Doggfather took it on to make one special lady in his life proud— his granny! read more

Daytime Emmy Nominations Feeling Very Restless

Jeanne Cooper by Robert Voets, Peter Bergman by Robert Voets, Tracey Bregman by Tony Esparza/CBS

Nominations for the 35th annual Daytime Emmy awards were announced Wednesday, and CBS' daytime lineup has the early lead with 51 total nods — or for comparison purposes 12.75 nominations per soap. ABC netted 27 noms for its three sudsers, while NBC's Days of Our Lives and Passions amassed 10 bids between 'em.Among the noteworthy tallies, The Young and the Restless collected 11 acting nods, including at least one contender in every race, while Days made an atypically strong showing, scoring four acting nominees. Kudoscast host ABC, meanwhile, may want to instead broadcast a test pattern, as All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live netted just three acting nods combined. That said, both GH and OLTL are vying in both the outstanding drama series and writing contests. The major races:Lead ActressMaura West (Carly, ATWT)Crystal Chappell (Olivia, GL)Nicole Forester (Cassie, GL)Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R)Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, Y&R)Lead ActorDavid Canary (A... read more

Andrea Evans "Thrilled" to Be Returning to One Life

Andrea Evans by Michael Bezjian/

One Life to Live will welcome back to its canvas a most special guest as the ABC serial prepares to mark its 40th anniversary: Come June, Andrea Evans will return as Tina Lord Roberts, the role for which she received a Daytime Emmy nod in 1990. Tina's arrival not only will bring with it the trouble that typically follows Viki's half sis, but also will open the door for another fan favorite to resurface. Hmmm...."Even though Andrea has not appeared on OLTL since 1990, she has remained among the most requested characters to return to the show," says exec producer Frank Valentini. "I welcome her home to OLTL and to the role where she made an indelible mark on our audience." Says Evans in her own statement, "For many years, both fans of mine and One Life to Live have wanted me to return. Now that the timing is right, I’m thrilled to be returning to the role of Tina, which I've always held near and dear to my heart."Some teasers from the folks at ABC:• "Tina has endured a life... read more

Snoop Dogg Unleashed on OLTL's Llanview

Snoop Dogg by Jason Kempin/

Viki is totally going to think this is the shizzle. Or at least Niki Smith will. Fun-living rapper Snoop Dogg will make what is being billed as "an extended cameo" on One Life to Live this May 8 and 9. Not only will Snoop perform (at Ultra Violet) a pair of songs from his new album, Ego Trippin', but the two episodes will feature a Dogg-licked mix of the OLTL theme song. "I've been a fan of One Life to Live since I was a baby," professes Snoop. "My momma always had it on the tube in the crib growing up. The opportunity to change up the theme song and give it some of my flavor will make the show the life of the party." Hey, as long as he doesn't bring back that stylized "clinking champagne glasses"/soft-porn version. — Matt Webb Mitovich read more

Was the WGA Strike Good for Soaps?

All My Children courtesy ABC

The 100-day Writers Guild walkout crippled most of showbiz, but all the daytime soaps stayed in production and most of them stayed in the pink — no drastic ratings slides, no horrible creative collapses. In fact, some shows are in better shape because of the strike. Free of head writer Hogan Sheffer, Days of our Lives has regained its heart and emotional chutzpah. The reunion of Grandpa Shawn (Frank Parker) and his long-lost dying sister Colleen (Shirley Jones) left me blubbering like a fool; the subsequent plane crash where Shawn sacrificed his life for his loved ones was harrowing and poignant. It’s been a long time since Days made us care this much. The Young and the Restless has quickly and vastly improved without exec producer/head writer Lynn Marie Latham, a wildly destructive force who fired many of the show’s great longtime staffers and filled the writing team with cronies (including her husband and son). CBS will not bring her back. Best. Decision. Ever. All M... read more

Mary J. Blige Suits Llanview "Just Fine"

Mary J. Blige by Kevin Mazur/

Usually, encores don't take a year and a half. Mary J. Blige will guest on ABC's One Life to Live on Friday, Feb. 15, and Monday, Feb. 18, marking the six-time Grammy winner's second trip to Llanview. As she did in July 2006 — after which her album sales soared 40 percent — Blige will appear as herself, this time serving as a surprise guest at Starr's sweet-16 party. (OK, well, it was a surprise.) Accompanied by her band, the songstress will perform her Grammy-nominated single "Just Fine," as well as "Hurt Again," a second song from her latest CD. read more

Michael Logan's Best of 2007: Supersized Edition!

Catherine Hickland by Donna Svennevik/ABC; Melody Thomas Scott courtesy CBS; Jon Hensley courtesy CBS

Best Soap: One Life to LiveIt started the year utterly crappy thanks to head writer Dena Higley, but after Erika Slezak (our hero!) royally blasted Higley on the Web, ABC fired the scribe and promoted wonder boy Ron Carlivati. Like magic, the show instantly regained its heart, its thrills, its smarts. The cast is a dream, especially Slezak, whose Viki found heaven in a Texas diner, Catherine Hickland as crazy (or is she?) Lindsay and Tuc Watkins as that gold-digging man-whore David. Once again, we're loving Life!Best Actress: The Young and the Restless' Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki)As the distraught mama faced with divorce and a comatose daughter, she pulled out all the stops, then pulled out a few more we never knew existed. This was deep, blistering work. Plus the lady gets extra points for acting sans makeup on high-def TV!Best Actor: As the World Turns' Jon Hensley (Holden)His quiet, no-baloney performance was a relief in a year of so much male showboating. Whether playing Holden'... read more

One Life to Live's Michael Trades Faces

Chris Stack by Donna Svennevik/ABC

One Life to Live has a new Michael McBain. Effective Dec. 3, actor Chris Stack (School of Rock) replaces troubled star Nathaniel Marston, who has been fired after his arrest for assaulting three people (plus a cop) in Manhattan in October. Crazily, Stack did a recurring gig on OLTL in 2003 as a preppie drug dealer who got Marston's character hooked on speed, a scenario that now seems "like a snake eating its own tail," Stack notes. "This is a bittersweet way to get a job. I remember Nathaniel very fondly and was sorry to hear of the circumstances that led to my hiring. At the same time, it's my hiring. I'm really thrilled to have a job." Too bad he'll start off on the wrong foot. Michael, who's facing perjury charges in Llanview, will jump bail and flee to Texas to find his on-the-lam wife. "That will come back to haunt him," Stack says. — Michael Logan read more

Preview: One Life Is Coming Back to Life!

Robin Strasser by Robert Milazzo/ABC

ABC's One Life to Live is a mess these days. And I mean that in a good way. An achingly dull catastrophe just a few months ago, OLTL has become the soap to watch under new head writer Ron Carlivati. Hot plots are colliding, laughs are abundant, and the show's many beloved vets — cavalierly ignored by previous head writer Dena Higley — are once again raising hell. Case in point: Thanksgiving week, Dorian catches her man, Clint, in a lip-lock with Nora and retaliates by hitting the sack with her ex-beau David, who just got married to Alex."Dorian assumes Clint and Nora are having a torrid affair when this is actually their first kiss," Carlivati says. "What Dorian doesn't know — because she ran when she saw the kiss — is that Clint and Nora pulled out of it and said, 'What are we doing?' Clint still loves Dorian." But it may be too late. The chain reaction continues when Clint finds Dorian in bed with David and threatens to blow the guy's head off with a shotgun. M... read more
