One Life to Live Execs Open Up About Their New Longterm Deals

As reported exclusively here last week, ABC Daytime has made a break with corporate tradition and confirmed new multi-year deals with One Life to Live's executive producer Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati. This is an obvious effort to quell the cancellation rumors that have plagued OLTL for months. Valentini, now in his eighth year as showrunner, has re-upped for two more. Carlivati has signed for three years. Because ABC owns its soaps, this is the closest it comes to a show pickup. But is it truly a reason to rejoice? General Hospital Leads Daytime Emmy Nominations

General Hospital nabbed a leading 18 Daytime Emmy Award nominations Wednesday as it goes for its 11th outstanding drama series trophy.

The ABC soap, which has won outstanding drama series more times than any other show, will vie for the top honor against All My Children, defending champion The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless. General Hospital last won the award in 2008.

One Life to Live Vet Phil Carey Dies at 83

Phil Carey

Phil Carey, who was well-known to daytime television fans for playing One Life to Live's Asa Buchanan, died on February 6, following a battle with lung cancer. He was 83.

Premise: Agnes Nixon's classic soap about the tempestuous 'burb of Llanview, where secrets abound, mostly about the Lord and Buchanan clans. It premiered July 15, 1968, and was one of the first soaps to feature major black characters, as well as full-blown music and fantasy episodes. In 2005, Erika Slezak won her record sixth Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as the oft-wed Viki Lord Buchanan. Alums include Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Phillipe, Roma Downey, Judith Light and Tom Berenger.
