April 5, 2007: They All Have Their Roles to Play Season 1, Episode 4

And don't we all. Let's start with the females, since there are fewer of them. Janet and Hannah are having some man troubles. Hannah wants Ray to stop coming around and picking up various things he seems to have accidentally left behind. Janet can't seem to stop looking for ways out of her "maybe" relationship with Eddie. I think both women need to decide what they want and just go after it. Hannah doesn't want Ray, but I'm not sure she wants Nick, either. She seems happy for her life to be about her and Sam right now, which I think is great. Janet needs to decide whether or not she can handle dating a guy like Eddie. He seems to have made that decision for her for now, but I don't think things are over between these two yet. More on Alison in a bit. Now for the boys. The most interesting relationship for me tonight was the one between the commander and his mystery lady. When both Ronnie and Nick are freaked out about their dad being happy, they suspect a woman might be the reason. I enjoyed the way Nick found out his dad was dating his boss, Dean Leslie. And when he sat down at the table he learned even more. To find out that the dean was responsible for Nick coming back to Knights Ridge was interesting. It was even more interesting that the dean did it to reunite Nick with his father. Her heart is in the right place, but I feel like that's going a little far. But if she hadn't done that, I guess we wouldn't have a show. Our protagonist Nick is exploring things with Aubrey. After they're caught by the dean in a semi-compromising position in Nick's classroom, the dean wants Nick to prove he's serious about his job. Nick thinks that means he needs to "pump the brakes" on his thing with Aubrey. She's upset, but she's been "pre-dumped before." After a separation of maybe six hours (and after the confrontation with his father and the dean), Nick invites Aubrey to the birthday BBQ. Whose birthday BBQ is it, you ask? Well, you know and I know it's for Alison. Alison doesn't seem to like Nick very much and can understand why everyone is mad at him about the book. Because Owen seems to love him so much she seems willing to tolerate Nick, but she still doesn't like him. But does she dislike Nick because of the book or because he knows about her and Ikey? I didn't enjoy her little speech about needing to have one thing for herself. Maybe the writers thought the speech would make her more sympathetic, but I think it's safe to say I understand her less. I mean, she's involved with a guy who, for all intents and purposes, lives with his mother. I still don't see what she sees in Ikey. Ikey's having a rough time of it. Nick urges him to tell Owen about the affair then changes his mind. Ray has decided to drive him and Eddie out of business because they're friends with Nick. With things going badly at home and at work, where can he turn? Not to Phil. After a bit of a dry spell, things seem to be going very well for him. He has a very cute date with Pizza Girl and they wake up in each other's arms. I'm happy he's getting some loving. And poor Sam. He wants Nick to date his mom again. That desire is shattered when he sees Nick kissing Aubrey at the BBQ. Yes, he was sent there to spy on Eddie for Janet, but after getting dosed with peanut butter he searches frantically for Nick. After seeing the lip lock he takes off on his bike. A car accident ends the episode with the commander, the dean and Ronnie standing over an unconscious Sam. Random thoughts: - Doesn't Owen know Sam has a peanut allergy? I assume he's continued being Hannah's friend in the 10 years Nick was gone. - I'd like some background on some of these nicknames. With a name like David, why have a nickname like Ikey? - Does every episode have some sort of lip-synching or air-guitar moment? It was a little different this week in that Owen and Ikey were actually singing, but you catch my drift. - We now know Nick's mom has been gone for 11 years. - The music tonight was awesome. show less
