February 15, 2007: Blood Brothers

“Dude, it’s bad,” Seth told Ryan. While having a piece of glass lodged in your back is not a good thing, this scenario led to the best scenes of this post-earthquake episode. And not surprisingly, they were all Seth-Ryan scenes. The relationship between these two so very different foster brothers was the initial premise of The O.C., and it has always remained the heart of the show. I was glad they were paired up for this next-to-last episode; I wouldn’t have minded if nearly the whole hour focused on them. From Ryan quietly text-messaging Seth for help, to Seth valiantly letting nothing stop him from reaching his brother, it was all good. Then when Seth, who’s not great in high-pressure situations, began to fall apart, an injured Ryan was there for him, trying to talk him through how to fix a flat (which of course did not go well). But their endless obstacles (including Seth’s shortcut that got them lost) were lightened by moments of humor, a tricky bal... read more

The O.C., One Tree Hill Find New Homes

On SOAPnet: the cabler announced on Wednesday that it had acquired the rights to all four seasons of each of the youth-skewed serials, to begin unspooling Apr. 9. Specifically, the early misadventures of Marissa, Ryan and the nubile Newporters will begin airing weekdays at 6 pm/ET, with the Tree Hillers airing an hour earlier, at 5.Speaking of sudsy matters, don't forget to catch the Scissor Sisters (notice how I said that as if I know who they are?) and TVGuide.com's own Daniel R. Question: The O.C. is winding down, and the finale is almost here. I need to know who is going to pop up in Newport again. Jimmy? Anna? Theresa? Hailey?

Answer: None of the above. There's a rumor floating around that Trey is returning, but that bad boy has "foiler" written all over it.

I'm glad you mentioned ...

Question: I'm glad you mentioned Danny's off-putting stalker tactics on Studio 60. Everyone I know who saw it had the same puzzled reaction. I get that Sorkin was probably thinking, "It's not stalking if she really does love him back, deep down," but then that totally sounds like the justification of a stalker. And between Jordan changing her phone number and Danny's "no" when she told him to stop, it was more than a little creepy. That same week on TV also provided Allison sympathizing a bit too much with the ghost of a stalker on Medium, and Taylor following Ryan around with binoculars and a logbook on The O.C. I don't take television seriously enough to actually get offended by it — I just thought it was a weird mini-trend in the depiction of TV romance, and I felt a little sorry for any previously stalked viewers who caught these shows. At least ER is still representing this particular mental illness in a realistic (totally scary) way. Answer: You win this week's I Watch More TV ... read more

I see you walking around ...

Question: I see you walking around midtown Manhattan all the time, and I always want to say, "How come you never answer my questions?" Hopefully you can get this one answered at press tour: Is the CW really interested in picking up The O.C.?

Answer: No. Dawn Ostroff and Josh Schwartz both confirmed that although the idea came up, it never went anywhere. The final episode of The O.C. will air on Feb. 22. End of story. (And thanks for not heckling me on the streets of New York.)

What can you tell me about ...

Question: What can you tell me about The O.C. finale?

Answer: Several things, all of them kinda spoilery: The series finale picks up six months after everyone's world gets, um, "shaken up"; there's a special event that requires Autumn Reeser to, as she blabbed to me at press tour, get "fitted for a certain dress"; we will learn the fate of Summer's favorite soap-within-a-soap, "The Valley"; and Ryan will appear in the final scene.

I know competing networks ...

Kiefer Sutherland, 24

Question: I know competing networks need to try to outdo each other, but does it make sense for Fox and NBC to schedule Heroes against 24? Both of these shows have a similar audience and are probably going to nip away at each other's ratings. I love both shows and am going to have a major decision on Monday night at 9. Also, The O.C. is one of Fox's most loyally watched "franchise" shows, but it had the unenviable task of being sandwiched between CSI and Grey's Anatomy. I think The O.C. could still be profitable for Fox. Heck, why not schedule it post-American Idol, where I am sure it would thrive again. Or just move it to another night entirely where the competition was not as hearty. Is it better to cancel a show than to get creative with its scheduling, or would the powers-that-be at Fox "lose face" by bowing to Grey's and CSI? Answer: It may not make sense to you, but put the Heroes-24 dilemma this way: Who was going to blink on Mondays? Not Fox, which has waited all season to ... read more

Premise: A slick hit about a troubled L.A. teen taken in by an idealistic lawyer and his family in affluent Orange County. The series filled the youth-soap hole left by the departed '90210,' but quickly proved itself far more gritty---and witty. In addition, early plots set up an appealing balance between the kids and grown-ups, who were portrayed as real people with real problems, instead of sounding boards for the unblemished Romeos and Juliets. From the directors of 'Go' and 'Charlie's Angels.'
