NBC's LAPD Books Three Stars

Regina King by Rebecca Sapp/WireImage.com

John Wells – the mighty force behind The West Wing and ER – has cast his new LAPD project with Regina King, Kevin Alejandro and Michael McGrady for NBC.According to The Hollywood Reporter, King will play Lydia, a smart, sympathetic detective in the Hollywood division.Alejandro will play Nate, a happily married detective with several kids, and McGrady will play a detective who deals primarily with gang-related crimes and is obsessed with his family's safety. All that's missing is the wise-cracking "goofball" character, but it's still early in the casting process. What's Justin Long up to these days? And for all you The O.C. fans out there, stay tuned, because Benjamin McKenzie is also in talks to star in LAPD. The WB is coming back — in Web form.TheWB.com, currently in beta, will officially launch on Aug. 27 and will stream a combo of defunct favorites and original Web series, the Hollywood Reporter reports. The online network is aiming to appeal to the same youth demographic as the broadcast network — which merged with UPN to form the CW two years ago — once did and will populate the site with old goodies like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friends, The O.C., Gilmore Girls, Angel and Roswell. But one can't just dwell in the past. Original Web skeins will roll out over the course of the next few months, beginning with two on the launch date: Blue Water High, about six Australian teens making waves at a surf academy, and A Boy Wearing Makeup, a video diary in which Mathiew Francis doles out beauty and fashion advice. The O.C. and Chuck honcho Josh Schwartz is slated to get in on the action too. What is up with the 90210 ...

Question: What is up with the 90210 spin-off rumor? I heard "Meet the Mills" is the name and that none of the original characters are coming back. Why don't they just call it The O.C. 2.0?

Answer: Fenster, you don't hear so good. As far as I know, the show is still untitled, but I'd be very surprised if producers didn't go with… Beverly Hills, 90210. A glance at Rob Thomas' script for the pilot tells me that Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez (the spawn of Andrea and Jesse) now helms the news desk at the "West Beverly Blaze," which is now apparently a TV show. Also roaming the halls of West Bev is Kelly Taylor, who teaches fashion design. (Wait, wasn't Donna the fashion designer? Oh right, she's now the proprietress of Bao Thai.) Whether or not Jennie Garth would ever sign on to be this s read more

The Latest on Mischa Barton's Gossip Gig

Mischa Barton by George Pimentel/WireImage.com

Their ears didn't deceive them: Those whispers that Gawker.com overheard about Mischa Barton being approached for a part on Gossip Girl, I can now report, are 100 percent true. What isn't 100 percent is whether or not a deal will be struck for her to play the recurring role of Georgina Sparks, a scheme queen who brings Serena's checkered past screaming into her present — although it's looking more unlikely with each passing hour. Shortly after we posted this story, Barton's reps told US Weekly that she turned down the gig. My sources, however, have yet to confirm that. The mere fact that Barton was even considered for the role suggests that if ever there was an ax to grind between Gossip monger Josh Schwartz, who killed Barton off of The O.C., and the starlet, that hatchet was buried along with the nubile body of Marissa Cooper. So what do you think, peeps? Will Barton fit in with the Girls? Or would the show be better off looking at a lesser-known actress? — Additional re... read more

The O.C.'s Top 10 Moments

"The Rainy Day Women"- Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson courtesy FOX

After four seasons and countless fistfights, the soap headed into the sunset, and we take a look back on its juiciest twists.1)"Welcome to the O.C., Bitch!” “Premiere” (August 5, 2003) Luke’s bon mot to new punching-bag-in-town Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) quickly became the signature line of the series. Says Schwartz, “Kids from Orange County say they’re from ‘the O.C.’ like it’s ‘the Ukraine.’ I always found it funny so I gave Luke that line.”2) Marissa Dies “The Graduates” (May 18, 2006) Marissa (Mischa Barton) died in Ryan’s arms after being run off the road by her bad-boy ex Volchok in Season 3’s shocking finale. Despite what the rumor mill would have you think, Schwartz contends that the tragedy was not dictated by anyone’s off-set antics: “Losing Marissa—and Mischa—was a big loss for the show.”3) Julie’s Affair With Luke “The Telenovela” (February 25, 2004) Jaws... read more

O.D. on The O.C. with Gossip Girl's BFF, Josh Schwartz

The O.C.: The Complete Series Collection courtesy Warner Home Video

Welcome to my column about The O.C., bitches! OK, I promise, last time I ever use that line in any variation. But I had to this time because The O.C.- The Complete Series box set hits the shelves this week and I’ve got none other than the master, Josh Schwartz, talking about the show, the set and the new gigs he’s got that ya’ll need to get with if ya ain’t already. OK, I am loving Gossip Girl.Cool! But first, we must talk about The OC box set.Yes, we do. [Laughs]What did you get to do with The Complete Series set that wasn’t in the previous seasons?Well, the first thing I got to do was really dorky: I finally put the first season in wide-screen, which had never been done before. But mostly, it’s the idea of having the entire series in one cool looking box.The box is gorgeous. The box is gorgeous. It’s like four years of your life—and of my life—in one box and we loaded it up with bonus features, scenes, behind-the scenes stuff, bloopers, c... read more

Premise: A slick hit about a troubled L.A. teen taken in by an idealistic lawyer and his family in affluent Orange County. The series filled the youth-soap hole left by the departed '90210,' but quickly proved itself far more gritty---and witty. In addition, early plots set up an appealing balance between the kids and grown-ups, who were portrayed as real people with real problems, instead of sounding boards for the unblemished Romeos and Juliets. From the directors of 'Go' and 'Charlie's Angels.'
