The conclusion of the "Becoming Human" series explores the roots of Homo sapiens, which are believed to stretch back some 200,000 years to southern Africa. The documentary details what may have led to the birth of the modern human and why the species emigrated from Africa. Also: whether Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, another human species, interbred; why Homo sapiens succeeded while other branches, including the Neanderthals, Homo erectus and the so-called "hobbits" of Indonesia, died out.
