The bonobo (aka pygmy chimpanzee) is examined. The creature, which rates among man's closest genetic relatives, lives in Congo, and was the subject of study in 1997 when the Congo civil war erupted, causing researchers to flee. Here, researchers return to gauge the damage the war---and the bush-meat trade---has wrought on the apes.
