Season 31, Episode 2 Who Killed the Red Baron?
First Aired: October 7, 2003
Who killed Baron Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron)? Forensic evidence and recently discovered papers hold clues about why the celebrated WWI German air ace met his fate on April 21, 1918. The hour also charts the development of air warfare during World War I (narrator Jeremiah Kissel calls it “a seesaw of technological advantage”); recalls Richthofen's stunning record of success (80 “kills” before he himself was killed, at age 25); and takes the measure of the man, who broke several of his own flying rules on the day he died. Says Herman von Richthofen's the Baron's grandnephew: “He was human.”
