Charting the alarming growth of the invasive alga caulerpa taxifolia through the Mediterranean. “It's a scientific horror story,” says narrator Jeremiah Kissel of the spread of this “green monster”: since 1989, more than 40,000 acres of Mediterranean coastal waters have been infested by the hardy alien, which subsumes other underwater plants. It's also inedible, so fish starve. The hour explores how caulerpa got to the Mediterranean, how it spread once it got there, and how scientists figured out what it is. The answer: a variant of a tropical alga grown by humans for use in aquariums.
