Following the 1996-2001 competition between Boeing and Lockheed Martin to win the U.S. Defense Department contract for the Joint Strike Fighter. It is the largest contract in military history (worth up to to $200 billion to the winner), so there's little wonder that the competition is “a furious engineering dogfight to the death,” as narrator Liev Shreiber puts it. Making the task trickier: the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps all want the plane, but they want it to do different things.
