Journalist Vladimir Pozner profiles soldiers responsible for launching Russia's nuclear warheads in a visit to a missile base 500 miles from Moscow. While these “rocketchiki” are elite, most of Russia's rockets are anything but. And the country's early-warning system is alarmingly inadequate (a 1995 false alarm was called off two minutes before a nuclear attack, Pozner says). But the soldiers interviewed here are resolute. “If an order is given it will be carried out,” says a colonel.
