Season 27, Episode 8 Tales From the Hive
First Aired: January 4, 2000
Using microscopic photography to follow life among one extended colony of bees for a year, during which one hive becomes three. As it opens, the hive is able to fend off a wasp in search of honey (but not a moth). Then the queen departs (with workers in tow) after laying her eggs, setting the stage for a battle between three royally bred females who would be queen. One dies, another departs (with her own entourage) and the third settles in to rule the hive, and to dally with a drone.
