Season 28, Episode 6 Survivor M.D.: Tattooed Doctor

First Aired: March 27, 2001

“Survivor M.D.,” a three-part update in a periodic series that follows members of Harvard Medical School's class of 1991. Profiled in Part 1: “Tattooed Doctor” Tom Tarter (he's also ponytailed), who's now an ER physician in Bloomington, Ind. The burly and brilliant Tarter grew up in a working-class Bronx family and didn't begin med school until age 31. An empathetic doctor (the result, he says, of numerous motorcycling and weightlifting injuries), Tarter has settled down but still loves tattoos. “Doctors hate tattoos,” he chuckles. “That's one of the things I like about them.”
