The Monitor, the U.S. Navy's first ironclad warship, is recalled. It “changed the way war was waged at sea,” says narrator Roy Scheider. The ship also boasted the world's first revolving gun turret, and this hour explores why these breakthroughs enabled it to maintain the Union's blockade of the Chesapeake by fighting the Confederate ironclad Merrimac to a standstill in March 1862 before sinking, less than nine months later, in rough seas off Cape Hatteras, N.C. The blockade, it has been argued, ensured an eventual Union victory.
