Discussing the progress of artificial-heart technology in the 30 years since Denton Cooley implanted the first mechanical device in a patient's chest in April 1969. Cooley is interviewed, as are fellow artificial-heart pioneers Michael DeBakey and Robert Jarvik, who are each developing left-ventricular assist devices (LVADs) as “bridges” for heart-transplant candidates. Also included: possibilities for an effective permanent “total-replacement” artificial heart. Other interviewees include Dr. Mehmet Oz of New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
