Season 27, Episode 7 Secrets of Lost Empires: Easter Island

First Aired: February 15, 2000

Part 3 of “Secrets of Lost Empires” visits Rapa Nui (formerly Easter Island) to try to determine how islanders moved and raised their huge stone statues called “maoi.” “It's a mystery locked in stone,” says narrator Stacy Keach, and the “Nova” crew has considerable difficulty with a maoi they made. “I think,” says archaeologist Jo Anne Van Tilburg, “that [ancient islanders] would think on their feet.” The hour recalls the civilization that built the maoi and speculates on why it collapsed.
