Charting the efforts of “Churchill's secret weapon” (Britain's “Station X” codebreakers) to penetrate Hitler's excruciatingly complex Enigma coding device. “It was like looking for something in a dark room. One didn't really know what one was looking for,” says John Herival, one of the codebreakers interviewed. But their efforts “shortened the war by two years,” speculates Tony Sale of England's Bletchley Park Trust (and led to modern computing). Adds Andrew Hodges, a biographer of codebreaker Alan Turing, “they were the people who held the keys to the Reich.”
