A 1987 sighting of a supernova, an exploded star that releases atomic particles with a force equal to "all the energy the sun will give out in its 10 billion-year lifetime, multiplied by 100." Researchers worked frantically to identify the star, because supernovas flash brilliantly but fade rather quickly.
