The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), a space-based telescope that in 1983 transmitted data based on the amount of heat given off by objects in space. IRAS detected six previously unknown comets, more than 20,000 galaxies, the birth of a star and a planetary system in the process of formimg.
