October 3, 2006: Dawn Budge Season 4, Episode 5

If you missed last week's episode, I can only imagine you were confused with this week's ending - now we know James ( Jacqueline Bisset) and her mysterious company are the ones behind those organ thefts in the Miami area. Her "escort company" isn't really an escort company - after her employees get their victims in a drugged-up state, James comes over and removes one of their organs! Lovely. I don't know why I hadn't figured it out since last week I thought for sure that Michelle had to have something to do with that lipstick lesbian picking up poor Liz at the bar and then taking her home, drugging her and removing one of her kidneys. The beautiful Ms. Bisset sure knows how to deliver a raunchy line in a classy way. I loved when she, in reference to Michelle, said to Christian: "Her [ another name for a cat] must have really purred for you, Dr. Troy. Michelle has been known to meow for her customers." Another highlight was hearing her (with that British accent) refer to the hand-rejuvenation surgery she asked Christian to perform on her as a "hand j*b." While I'm mentioning the adult language, guest star Rosie O'Donnell had me laughing out loud several times. Now, Rosie -- she's someone I'm used to hearing dirty words from. But I never thought I'd see her in a Julian McMahon's-naked-behind sex scene. Rosie was hilarious as Power Ball winner Dawn Budge, who wanted millions of dollars worth of plastic surgery from McNamara/Troy. My favorite line of Rosie's that had me rewinding my TiVo was during the aforementioned sex scene (where she was tastefully covered up): "Your ass is really brown -- what is that, Mystic spray-on tan? Are you all the way in? I am so worried about Britney and K-Fed -- he's just like [her husband] Dwight -- overwhelmed by the sudden glamour and wealth." Shut up with "Are you all the way in?"! I thought it was a clever way for Christian to make tons of money -- all the dough he owed James -- by making over Dawn and then sleeping with her. I didn't care for the white-trashiness of Dwight getting caught "doin' it" with his stepdaughter Mallory. A bit of trivia: Mallory was played by Misti Traya, whose mother in real life is Kiersten Warren, who happens to play the very white-trash Nora on Desperate Housewives. Seriously. It gets me kind of Misti-eyed. Excellent usage of the song "Money" by the Flying Lizards during the Dawn-makeover scene: "The best things in life are free. But you can't get that from the birds and bees -- I want money. That's what I want." Recently obtained money was clearly the theme throughout, especially when Dawn said at the end: "Money can't buy you love. Thinner thighs? Absolutely." I died when Christian made Dawn spit out her gum and when she screamed "Sweet Jesus!" during her waxing appointment. And how about the word "McMansion" she used? Brought to mind three things to me: McDonald's, Grey's Anatomy and Julian McMahon(-sion). I wasn't digging the Kimber and Matt story line, especially when Sean hired someone to abduct Matt off the street, then had Matt get away. What was with the abductors not being able to "take" the plethora of coming-out-of-nowhere Scientologists? And could Kimber seem any more uninterested in Matt sexually? I was expecting that sauna scene to turn into more, but she just laid there taking in the heat and "sweating out all the poisons" with Matt. That was Adria Dawn from Popular as Parker, the gal who helped Kimber move Matt out of Sean and Julia's house. Now that Sean and Julia are remarried, I wonder how long it will take Sean to cheat on her. At least he stopped calling Cindy Plumb's phone-sex line. Note to FX: Can you please play the scenes from next week during the actual hour, so my TiVo doesn't cut them off? I missed them yet again, so call me Alicia Silverstone. show less

Premise: A pungent plastic-surgery drama that keeps its humanity amid some graphic operation scenes that aren't for the squeamish. The FX hit smoothly mixes searing drama and mordant humor as it dissects conflicts between two physicians who are partners and best friends: the skirt-chasing, morality-challenged Christian Troy and idealistic Sean McNamara, who's (slightly) more straitlaced. Christian and Sean were based in Miami for the show's first four seasons but moved to L.A. for the last three.
