A Matter of Choice?

First Aired: May 21, 2002

Part 2 of this five-part series on gay life in America assesses attitudes about homosexuality in Roanoke, Va., in the wake of the hate-crime killing of a man in a gay bar, and a subsequent series of pieces about gay life in Roanoke in the local newspaper. The mostly positive series “touched a nerve,” an editor at the paper says. But the reaction to the murder was one of disgust throughout Roanoke. Sums up a gay businessman: “Roanoke is progressive in many ways and conservative in many ways.”
