Ratings: CBS on Top; Body of Proof Improves

Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo

CBS edged NBC out of the top spot Tuesday.

NCIS was even with last week, drawing 16.7 million viewers and a 2.6 demo rating in the adults 18-to-49 demographic. NCIS: Los Angeles (13.9 million, 2.6) and Golden Boy (8 million, 1.4) both dropped a tenth.

The Voice (12.4 million, 4.0) dropped ...

The Tuesday Playlist: NBC Falls Out Of Love

Amber Kelleher-Andrews, Matt Hussey, Tracy McMillan

Way to squander a Voice lead-in, NBC. Turns out America wasn't ready to waste another night of the broadcast week on a ridiculously padded dating show, so after this week, Ready for Love (Tuesday, 9:01/8:01c) goes into reality limbo — and honestly, if scripted duds can get yanked without notice, why should lousy competition-reality shows be exempt when shunned like this one was? On the plus side, with The Voice about to end its enjoyable "battle" rounds and move next week into the "knockout" phase, the expanded Tuesday edition will be joined April 30 by the clever supernatural thriller Grimm, given a well-deserved reprieve from the Friday trenches for the rest of the season. (Part of me wishes NBC would invest more heavily in Hannibal and give it a shot in this wide-open Tuesday time period, but Grimm is probably a better fit.)

Hoping to Duplicate Success, Networks Turn to More Spinoffs

Kim Raver and Chris O'Donnell

It's one of the oldest adages in Hollywood: If at first you do succeed, try and try again... to replicate that hit. Just as the movie business remains entrenched in sequel mania (Scary Movie 5, anyone?), almost every broadcast network has a spinoff of a popular series in the works for next season.

ABC is looking to expand its Once Upon A Time universe with the Alice-centric Once: Wonderland. The CW is building The Originals around The Vampire Diaries baddie Klaus (Joseph Morgan). NBC will explore Chicago law enforcement in producer Dick Wolf's untitled Chicago Fire offshoot. read more

Ask Matt: NCIS' "Red" Team, Top of the Lake, Gays on Days, More

Elisabeth Moss

Question: Are you as I stumped as I am about what makes the NCIS Red Team unique? In last week's episode of NCIS: LA, there was a moment when they were trying to tell a Mexican gunman to put his weapon down and none of them could speak Spanish. Which is odd given they are suppose to be a very mobile unit that goes anywhere, you would think they would be well versed in multiple languages. I was under the impression they were going to be NCIS' version of Seal Team Six. As for casting, the only one of the team that made an impression on me was the Aussie agent Claire Keats (Gillian Alexy). I still think Kelli Giddish would have been a better choice for the lead. Just my thoughts. — Leon

The Tuesday Playlist: Family Affairs on New Girl and NCIS

Margo Martindale and Jake Johnson

What kind of family must it be where slacker bartender Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) is seen as the responsible one? That answer becomes clear in a sporadically amusing road-trip episode of Fox's New Girl (9/8c) that takes the roomies to Chicago to lay Nick's scoundrel of a dad (former guest star Dennis Farina) to rest. The formidable Margo Martindale (Justified, The Americans) presides over the ridiculous antics as Nick's gruff but needy mom, and cable clown Nick Kroll hams it up as his emotionally volatile brother. As usual, Schmidt (Max Greenberg) hijacks the proceedings with his death neuroses, and while he wonders "What's with this open casket thing?" it's his encounter with said coffin and its contents that provides the episode's biggest laughs.
