A look at the challenges facing Africa's lion population, which has dropped from an estimated 100,000 in the early 1990s to about 30,000 today, as well as efforts to reverse that trend. Included: the Lion Sperm Bank, which uses artificial insemination to introduce genetic diversity into isolated prides; and Il Ngwesi, a Masai-run tourist stop that showcases lions and other animals in their natural habitats. Also: comments from big-cat experts, conservation officials and Masai herdsmen.
