Season 22, Episode 11 Flight School
First Aired: April 11, 2004
Endangered whooping-crane chicks are trained for survival and a 1200-mile migration flight by scientists, who lead the journey in ultralight aircraft after raising the flock in disguise as cranes to act as the birds' surrogate parents in a process of social bonding called imprinting. The flock starts with 10 young whoopers, but physical and personality differences weed out some chicks prior to takeoff.
