Season 18, Episode 12 Jackals of the African Crater

First Aired: February 27, 2000

“It's a dog's life for jackals,” says narrator Keith David at the outset of this hour following three species of the doglike mammal as they live and die in Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater. Jackals are wily and aren't picky eaters (they hunt, scavenge, gather mushrooms and aren't beneath eating insects). They bond in families and mate for life but can be vicious to fawns and wildebeests---and, as seen here, to jackals that aren't immediate family members.
