This is a singing contest, right? I'm just checking, because did anyone really
sing tonight? Cowboy Troy doesn't sing. Even Angela didn't bring the best she could tonight. I mean, Blake wanted to punch himself in the face. What does that say? (Maybe he should anyway, so that's irrelevant, really.) Sadly, I think the most exciting part of the show was the group performance. Everyone's voices came out to play in harmony, and I didn't fast-forward through any of it.
But luckily, four people get to stay despite tonight's so-so outcome. Farewell, Whitney. I felt bad for her when she was talking about all the message-board comments that were hard to digest. So, Whitney, if you're reading this, good job tonight. Pretty solid. Great dress. Star smile. I won't say anything about pitch - the judges have said enough.
Unfortunately for the lovable, huggable Zac, his song bored me this week. He still had that rugged edge to his voice, but it wasn't all there. And is it me, or does Anastasia love getting booed? She just lets the criticism pour out of her mouth from her safe seat behind that table. Easy, girl! She's probably right most of the time concerning technical aspects, but I'm still taken aback by some of her comments, so I can only imagine how the singers feel.
It was sweet that David chose the song that meant the most to him and his wife, but I don't think it helped showcase his voice. It didn't really pick up for me until the end, but I think fans will like it enough to keep him around.
And Joshua, what's up with all the fainting? If you're going to be a big star, you can't be droppin' to the ground every other day. He seemed relaxed walking through the audience tonight, though. It looked tricky to be singing, hugging his son, and then walk up on stage and pick up the guitar. I was impressed that he kept his voice pretty level through all that movement. It was the first performance of the night that had any spark.
I was hoping Angela could break the bland streak, but she was having an off night herself. Making love to the camera was a little weird, too, and I agreed with Blake when he said it wasn't the Angela he knew.
I guess it's hard to be amazing every single week, but if it takes all five of the contestants singing together to make a worthwhile performance, that's not good, especially at this point in the competition. I hope the final four return next week refreshed and awake. Choose songs that get us going, choose melodies that impress, choose a performance that moves. Do
something that makes us sit up and vote.
PS. Jewel, much better dress choice. Where's Ty? We always get to see the wives, kids and parents with their glittery T-shirts and signs. I want to see your boyfriend cheering you on! OK, maybe I just want to see him, period.
