"Arrested Development" Season 1, Episode 5

So Beth and Josh aren't engaged. In fact, they've been together a year and haven't made it to living together yet. That's not such a bad thing considering that Beth kissed Mick. Twice. After the blood-sharing incident of last week, Mick's been avoiding Beth, and for good reason. He's got feelings for her but he knows a relationship between him and Beth (or any human really) will only end badly. Pretending to ask a question pertinent to the case, Beth even asks Mick about sex between vampires and humans. He tells her it's never a good idea. Which brings me to the case: The teenage vampire, looking like a 16-year-old but actually being 197 years of age, has a thing for escorts. Someone in the brothel where he worked turned him. He's never had a chance to grow out of his awkward phase and love someone, and he's punishing some local working girls for that. He was working in the San Francisco area but decides to relocate to Los Angeles. While Beth works that angle, Mick works a missing-persons angle on the same case. He's got two scared parents looking for their missing daughter. At first they think the teenage vamp's first victim is their daughter Cherish but that turns out to be her friend and ex-roommate, Jazzmyne. Tracking down the last guys who got in touch with her through her website leads them to Cherish and the teen vamp. Mick attempts to help him, but a fight between the two leads to the teen vamp's decapitation. Mick tried. He was just dealing with too much rage and disappointment. Josh might be feeling some of those emotions soon if he finds out about Beth and Mick. She leaves in the middle of their anniversary party to follow up a lead at the morgue. Actually, I'm not sure she even made it that far since she left right after the toast. Josh calls her out about Mick, telling Beth he's seen the way she and Mick are together. I'm surprised he didn't say anything more but I think he's such a nice guy he's probably trying to give her space to figure it out. Or maybe he knows it's too far gone to do anything about it. We'll see how it plays out. It was nice to see Josef briefly and to meet geeky vamp Rider. I guess they can't all be like Mick. I liked seeing their reactions to Beth when she came over to help with the sting operation. Josef's got to be a little worried though. If he doesn't know how Mick feels about Beth, he's got to be suspicious. And I can't imagine he'd be happy about that development. Mick falling for a human probably wouldn't be good for the vampires. Since I have yet to mention Lt. Carl Davis (although he's been in a number of episodes), I thought I'd do that here. He works as a pretty good device for letting both Beth and us know what's going on at the crime scenes as well as the angle the police are working. Other than that I really don't have an opinion one way or the other on him. What did you think about tonight's developments? Do you see a future for Beth and Mick? Where does that leave Josh? Were you as glad as I was that Beth wouldn't exploit Cherish and her parents for a story? Check out our Online Video Guide for more on Moonlight. show less
