Exclusive: Hector Elizondo Shrinks to Fit Monk

Hector Elizondo by Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.com

Well, we kinda knew Monk couldn't go too long without an analyst, right? So, tragic as is the April 8 death of Stanley Kamel — aka the neurotic's Dr. Kroger — a USA Network spokesperson confirms to me exclusively that Hector Elizondo has been tapped to join Monk as Tony Shalhoub's new shrink. There's no word on how his character will be introduced, but he'll first turn up in the show's seventh season premiere on July 18.On a related note, Elizondo's hiring would seem to signal that CBS' Cane is a goner. So what's your take, peeps? Will you have a harder time adjusting to seeing Monk on someone else's couch than he'll have being on someone else's couch? Or do you remember Elizondo so fondly from Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries that you'll actually be psyched to see him take a role on a show you actually watch? USA Orders Up More Monk

Monk by Peter "Hopper" Stone/USA

USA Network has announced that Monk will return this summer for a seventh season that will anchor an aggressive slate of new programming for the NBC-owned cable network. "You might say we were obsessed with making this deal," Jeff Wachtel, USA's executive vice president of original programming, quips, alluding to star Tony Shalhoub's obsessive-compulsive character. "It's not easy to wash your hands of a show like Monk."But will the seventh season be the show's last? "We have to be thinking of that," Wachtel says. "[Producer Andy Breckman is] starting to wrap up the show's mythology if this is, in fact, the final season." In all, USA will debut new episodes of seven series this summer, including Monk, Psych, The Starter Wife, Burn Notice, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and two new series. — Mickey O'Connor read more

Monk Finale Preview: Jail for Our Fastidious Friend?

Traylor Howard, Tony Shalhoub, Ted Levine and Scott Glenn, Monk

Well, he's no Jack Bauer. 24's tough-guy hero can withstand electrodes, knives and other unpleasant instruments of torture. But the obsessive-compulsive Adrian Monk? The mess of getting fingerprinted pretty much strains his limits. But who says nice guys finish last? USA Network's Monk (tonight at 9 pm/ET) has topped the cable charts in recent weeks, and the two-part season finale, with Monk arrested and prison-bound on false murder charges, demonstrates why. A tribute to The Fugitive that includes a wrongful accusation, a relentless lawman's pursuit and — in a nod to that fabled, elusive one-armed man — a six-fingered killer, the finale combines the comedy and mystery that keeps Monk pulling in viewers after six seasons. "In terms of the psychological and physical danger Monk's in," star Tony Shalhoub says, "t read more

Monk: Why USA's Quirky Detective Will Lighten Your Mood

Traylor Howard and Tony Shalhoub by Peter "Hopper" Stone/USA Network

The when: Fridays at 9 pm/ET on USA NetworkWhy watch?: The introspective detective is back on the job for the second half of Monk's sixth season. Tony Shalhoub (see related Q&A here) plays Adrian Monk, the eagle-eyed and obsessive-compulsive investigator with fears galore (dirt, asymmetry, heights, pretty much everything), whose sharp mind still fingers the right culprit every time. Add to that his wife Trudy's mysterious and haunting death 10 years ago and you've got one complex crime-fighter. But don't get your tissues out yet. Despite those facts, Monk has some of the smartest humor around. And this many years in, it still remains a refreshing and believable jaunt into a life very different from those we usually see on TV. We only wish the season were even longer.Who's who: Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) gets by with a little help from his assistant/right-and-left-hand woman, Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard), who always has a hand wipe at the ready. Though Monk always sleuths out... read more

Premise: An ex-cop suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder solves crimes with various (and usually exasperated) sidekicks in tow in this first-rate mystery with a breakout Emmy-winning star in Tony Shalhoub. The 'defective detective' may have an abundance of phobias (heights, crowds, and even milk, among them), but he also has razor-sharp deductive skills, which he uses to help the San Francisco police with especially baffling cases.
