USA Network has announced that Monk will return this summer for a seventh season that will anchor an aggressive slate of new programming for the NBC-owned cable network. "You might say we were obsessed with making this deal," Jeff Wachtel, USA's executive vice president of original programming, quips, alluding to star Tony Shalhoub's obsessive-compulsive character. "It's not easy to wash your hands of a show like Monk."But will the seventh season be the show's last? "We have to be thinking of that," Wachtel says. "[Producer Andy Breckman is] starting to wrap up the show's mythology if this is, in fact, the final season." The strike-schedule shuffle continues for NBC, which in the wake of Deal or No Deal's mighty Monday numbers has pushed back the broadcast television port of Quarterlife almost two weeks. The online original was to arrive on NBC on Monday, Feb. 18, but now is moving to Sundays-at-9 beginning Feb. 26. As a result, Psych and Monk — the USA Network series that were to get Peacock repurposing starting March 2 — will now be held until Sunday, April 6, and air from 8 to 10 pm/ET. — Matt Mitovich

The when: Fridays at 9 pm/ET on USA NetworkWhy watch?: The introspective detective is back on the job for the second half of Monk's sixth season. Tony Shalhoub (see related Q&A here) plays Adrian Monk, the eagle-eyed and obsessive-compulsive investigator with fears galore (dirt, asymmetry, heights, pretty much everything), whose sharp mind still fingers the right culprit every time. Add to that his wife Trudy's mysterious and haunting death 10 years ago and you've got one complex crime-fighter. But don't get your tissues out yet. Despite those facts, Monk has some of the smartest humor around. And this many years in, it still remains a refreshing and believable jaunt into a life very different from those we usually see on TV. I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line?Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast?And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower love on my favorite new show of 2007, AMC's Mad Men, and its terrific star, Jon Hamm (who has just joined the cast of the remake of the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, which sounds appropriately robotic). Peacock cannot live on half-baked reality alone. Monk and Psych, both of which return to USA Network with new episodes on Friday, Jan. 11, will get encore Sunday-night showings on NBC beginning in March, reports the Hollywood Reporter.NBC, which has already added Law & Order: CI repeats and the Web original Quarterlife to its midseason slate, is also hot to fire up Burn Notice, but that is not as easy, since the series is produced by the News Corp.-owned Fox TV Studios.
