Red Band Society

Question: I'm a fan and read your column every week. I've watched the pilots for Forever and Red Band Society, and have added them to my list of shows I'll be watching. I hope they do well. I was wondering if you have seen them, and if so, what did you think? I found Red Band Society to be a feel-good show. I can't help but wonder, though, if it shouldn't be on a younger TV station like MTV, and the fact that it isn't makes me worry about its chances, as it is geared toward a younger audience. Forever is very Sherlock Holmes, which is right up my alley, and I love it whenever Ioan Gruffudd is on my TV screen. Do you think making the pilots available early hurts a TV show? What are your thoughts? - Carmelita

Critic's Notebook: The Network Upfronts

Robin Lord Taylor, Benjamin McKenzie

A curious rite of mid-May: Even as the broadcast networks are wrapping their regular seasons with a flurry of cliffhangers and finale events — farewell, Cristina Yang, and a toast to those soon-to-be-newlyweds Mitch and Cam — all eyes in the industry are already looking to the future, with a just-concluded Upfront Week of noisy presentations in New York in which new series and schedules are announced with a fanfare that probably beats the alternative: blowing taps for all the failed series announced last year at this time.

Monday TV: Mom's the Word, and Warehouse 13 Opens One Last Time

Allison Janney, Anna Faris

All season long, I've been likening CBS's freshman sleeper Mom to gritty sitcom foremothers like Roseanne and Grace Under Fire (shows on which executive producer Chuck Lorre famously spent time before his current CBS heyday). That comparison rings especially true in the first-season finale (Monday, 9:30/8:30c), as third-generation mom-too-soon Violet (Sadie Calvano) gives birth while her own imperfect mother, Christy (Anna Faris), and caustic grandma Bonnie (Allison Janney) look on with emotional empathy. read more
