Modern Family Episode Recap: "Boys' Night" Season 2, Episode 18

After a couple weeks off, Modern Family is back! In this episode we meet the Dunphys' creepy neighbor and Mitch and Cam have a surprise visitor at their boys night out — Jay.

Jay and Gloria try to get Manny to try new things, but it's Jay who has the problem. He mistakes Vivaldi for Valli and then refuses to attend the symphony with Gloria and Manny who confront him for his hypocrisy.

During a family Wiffle Ball game, Claire hits a home run into the scary neighbor's yard. They opt to end the game rather than face Walt Kleezak (Philip Baker Hall). Luke, as fearless and he is clueless, marches right over to collect the ball and quickly develops an unlikely friendship with the ill old man. Phil and Claire forbid the friendship but realize they are judging Mr. Kleezak without knowing much about him. A trip next door to introduce themselves doesn't go as planned when they mistake their napping neighbor for a dead neighbor. Luke confronts Walt and blames him for ending the friendship. Walt comes by to apologize and give a peace offering of onions from his garden, and teaches Claire and Phil a lesson about pre-judging people.

Cam and Mitch are planning a Saturday night out with friends Pepper, Crispin, and Longinus, and are scrambling to find a baby sitter. Haley lunges at the opportunity to get out of the house while grounded, and Mitch eventually accepts her offer. At the booze-drenched boys night out, the guys are all discussing their first celebrity crushes and trading witty barbs. When Jay wanders into the same bar to kill time, he ends up joining the big gay party. And he's a total hit. Meanwhile, Cam calls to check on Haley when he sees a boy on the nannycam.  She denies and resents the accusation but gets busted when Dylan, leaves his shoes behind. Meanwhile, Jay's dealing with his hangover when he realizes he's made a shopping date with Pepper. Gloria pushes Jay to keep the date to teach him a lesson about trying new things.

My picks for this episode's best lines:
MANNY:  Hump day. Am I right, Jay?
JAY: Your day ends at 2:30.

LUKE: Ha-ha, boys rule and girls drool.
ALEX: You drool all the time. Mom had to take you to a specialist.
LUKE: I'm still growing into my tongue.

CAM: A shot? With our only child! Sure! Why not? If something goes wrong we'll just pop over to the Orient and grab another one.

JAY: So what does a guy have to do to get a drink around here?
MITCH: Nobody say anything.

JAY: Your name is Longinus?
LONGINUS: I know. I never had a shot.

WALT: And keep your blinds closed when you're doing your little sexy dance!
PHIL: Oh god, he's seen my sexy dance.

I thought this episode was so touching, I almost cried when Mr. Kleezak comes to apologize to the Dunphys. What can I say? I am a sucker for youngster/curmudgeon friendship plots. Your thoughts? Leave a comment!
