Mike & Molly Episode Recap: "Pilot" Season 1, Episode 1

I feel like I'd follow Melissa McCarthy to the ends of the earth — and not just in terms of television watching. I first discovered her in a bit part when she stole the scene she was in with Scott Wolf (or was it Jay Mohr?) in a little movie called Go. She didn't come back onto my radar until Gilmore Girls, but what a great way to make a return. Her adorable and somewhat neurotic and accident-prone Sookie St. James was a revelation. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel weren't half bad either. Kidding, kidding. They were awesome. I loved that show. Next she spent some time with Christina Applegate on Samantha Who? and now she's where she belongs: in a lead role. It's about time.

I know a lot has been made of the fact that two plus-size people are leads here, but I don't really want to focus on that. Yes, Mike and Molly meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. Yes, they have very serious issues with food. But they're also two lonely people looking for love. They haven't given up on themselves or others and I think there's something very sweet in that.

When we first meet Mike he's having a very stripped down meal — just the hotdog. No bun, no condiments. Totally boring. But according to Modern Bride, he'll make some headway with this diet. Molly, on the other hand, is on the elliptical. She seems to be doing pretty well until her mom saunters in with a decadent slice of chocolate cake. When her sister joins in on the fun, it's all Molly can take. If they're just going to torture her by eating the cake right in front of her she's going to go to her OA meeting. And that's where Mike and Molly meet. He's funny. She's charmed. She asks him to talk to her 4th grade class. That goes pretty well until Mike mentions that his father fell for a prostitute and broke the family up. Even though he has a chance to ask her out later, he loses his nerve.

Back at OA, it's Molly's turn to tell us about her food issues. Her father was a large man. She knows she'll never be a size 2, but she likes who she is. When she sees Mike they step outside for a moment. Just as he's about to ask her out (and after he's tells her about his love for fish), things go terribly wrong. The table he is leaning against collapses and Mike has to head to the hospital. It's not a pretty visual.

The next day Mike's partner Carl refuses to let fall off the wagon. Mike's making progress and Carl won't let him mess it all up. Later when they're responding to a burglary call they end up at Molly's house. Mike knows it now or never and he asks her out. After she says, "Yes," Carl takes that moment to reveal what a caring and sensitive man he is. I didn't think he had it in him.

I hope they utilize Swoosie Kurtz more in the coming episode. That woman is a comic genius but we didn't see enough of her tonight. I'm not loving Molly's sister Victoria. Maybe she'll grow on me.

I'll definitely be back next week to see how Mike and Molly's courtship progresses. How about you?
