One thing I always love about this show and will continue to love is all the supporting characters. Im also a big fan of Marin (obviously) but I like her more when shes dealing with the craziness of all the other regulars. Where are Buzz and Mai? Where are all of Celias snappy returns? Where is that Marin and Jack spark that we love to see every week? Thats hard to duplicate when Jack and Marin dont actually share any screen time. And Im definitely missing it. Now that Marins committed herself to Jack and has turned into a woman who waits by the phone and knits, is she still the same Marin? One thing that remains the same is her propensity to attract trouble. This weeks trouble comes wrapped up in a big Patrick bow. With his memory gone, hes basically starting from scratch and he sees something he likes in Marin. I laughed out loud when he tried to kiss her mostly because Marin was so horrified and did a mad scramble to ge...

I blog to you from an Aer Lingus jet, high over the Atlantic Ocean on its journey from Dublin. I'm happy to report that Men in Trees is shown on not one, but two Irish television stations, a small step in our ultimate goal of Elmo world domination. Everyone in Ireland is loving the show, although those I spoke to are all related to me so it may be a rather unscientific focus group. As the title of "Sweatering It Out" suggests, Marin is knitting a sweater for Jack to keep her occupied until his return from the Bering Sea. Anne Heche is such a dedicated actress that she actually learned how to knit for the show, and she is making a real sweater pattern in the scenes. (Obviously Marin has never heard the old wives' tale that you must never knit a sweater for your boyfriend.) Anne must have inspired the rest of us because now our cast and crew are all knitting a blanket together for charity. As soon as one of our assistant directors announces that we are ready to continue shooting a s...

Question: I just finished watching the Thanksgiving episode of Grey's Anatomy and I am so happy! I feel like my show is back! I have hope that the whole George-Izzie thing is not going to happen. The ambulance scene was moving and gritty, and the Seth Green blood scene, though predictable, was exciting. I am really looking forward to the Alex-Ava-Lexie triangle. I only hope they don't waste Callie's character. I liked George and Callie. I realize that ship has sailed, but Sara Ramirez is so beautiful and so great at being Callie, I want her to be a main character again. On another note, I really love Men in Trees and would like to again state how much fun it was when it followed Grey's Anatomy. Any chance?
Answer: I'm enjoying Grey's again with far fewer reservations these days, although I agree it's time to move past the George-Izzie thing and restore their friendship before the whole sex issue (and its accompanying ick factor) ruins it forever. I'm a Callie fan as well, and hope the

I go on vacation and Elmo is consumed by craziness. Well, I might be overselling it. I do want to say thanks to Matt for blogging on the show the past few weeks. So, what do you make of this change in Patrick? I think its a pretty interesting obstacle in his relationship with Annie and I loved Dick and Celias suggestion that Annie try a more physical approach to getting Patrick to remember her and their life together. Its just too bad it didnt work. What I find interesting is that Patrick still seems to be a pretty good guy sometimes. I didnt love it when he called himself lame and told all his gathered friends there was nothing about his life worth remembering. I also didnt like and Annie didnt either him saying hed call her after theyd had sex. Annie was happy with her new Patrick when they were between the sheets but the one she has to deal with the rest of the time just isnt the man she was supposed ...

I feared it the second that Mario Cantone slipped the barrette into Patrick's hair. In that instant, the purpose of the fierce winds and looming rain, coupled with the "contusions and hemorrhaging" promo for this week's episode, became clear. Elmo's undeniably cursed wedding would be cut short by a struck-down groom.Funny, when you think about it, that a lightning strike came at a time when the word "strike" is in all the headlines.OK, a tiny bit funny. I never said hysterical.By the way, it's Matt Mitovich here again. The resolution of last week's cliffhanger was a bit pat and anticlimactic. Cash lobs a few rocks at the wolves and all is good? Cop-out! So, this would have been the Season 1 finale. I appreciate that Men in Trees isn't all about the angst, the over-dramatic cliffhangers, when it very easily could be and so many other shows are. I wonder where we're going with the Patrick thing (assuming it's not a sitcom spin-off titled "Patrick Who?"). I feared that he would awake a...

Question: I've been a fan of Men in Trees since its beginning, but I was livid after watching the erroneous representation of wolves in the most recent episode! Along with thousands of others, I am fighting along with the Defenders of Wildlife to prevent our government from slaughtering wolves from helicopters. For this episode to air, especially at this time, is incredibly irresponsible and continues to perpetuate the myth of packs of wolves attacking humans! Defenders of Wildlife raised money to broadcast advertisements on CNN showing the gloomy future for our wolves if our government continues to buckle under to pressure from various special-interest groups.
Answer: Without having seen this Friday's episode, to see how Marin (and Annie's runaway cat) emerges from the cliff-hanger encounter with the snarling wolf pack, I can only say that I didn't take it all that personally, that I considered the wolves mostly a metaphor, as nature usually is on the show. Until, of course, the ...

I'm sure you're all wondering what's going to happen after last week's "Men in Trees" cliffhanger. "Nice Day For A Dry Wedding" was designed to be the grand finale of our first season, so I can promise that it contains some pretty dramatic developments, and will also satisfy some long-standing questions. Will Marin be devoured by wolves, or will she be rescued? Jack won't be around to save her this time. Will Annie still insist on calling off the wedding? Will the Chieftain survive being shut down? In this week's episode we finally come to the big day of Annie and Patrick's wedding. I had so much fun on this episode because it was almost like getting married, but without the hassle of the Jordan almonds and annoying In Laws. (Now that "Men in Trees" has enabled me to finally buy my Cuisinart stand mixer and also get me in a wedding dress, there is no longer any reason for me to actually get married.) Our costume designer, Susan De Laval, consulted with me every step of the way, just...

Question: This may seem like a naive question, and you may have already answered it, but could the writers' strike benefit shows like Friday Night Lights and Men in Trees? Could the lack of new shows allow new viewers to tune in to these gems, especially if networks take the time to try them at more viewer-friendly time slots? Or are we just going to suffer through reruns of Private Practice and Bionic Woman?
Answer: The silver lining for these ratings-challenged shows (and they're personal favorites of mine as well) is that they're much less likely to be yanked off the air quickly because of their dismal Friday numbers, given the networks' need for fresh material in the weeks and maybe months to come. (In retrospect, Men in Trees' long hiatus last season is almost a blessing, having given the show five leftover episodes to start this season — and we're only now getting to the end of those — and something like 10 more have reportedly been completed.) How the networks will treat thi ...

Question: Since about 2000, I've tried to find one place on the TV lineup where there are three continuous hours of television that I want to watch. I think it began with Millionaire, The West Wing and Law & Order, and then there was Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars and Judging Amy. My favorite trifecta was last season's Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy and Men in Trees, which was fun while it lasted. Now, to my surprise, this year I have an all-freshman guilty-pleasure trifecta on Wednesdays: Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money, although that will soon be complicated by another guilty pleasure, Project Runway. I know that since you get screeners you don't necessarily watch TV live or in order, but do you have a trifecta?
Answer: It's not so much that I get screeners (fewer than you'd imagine this time of year) but that, like others who watch TV in high volume with an eye for time management in a DVR age, I tend not to watch TV in real time. That often means that I start the evening by
