Melrose Place Episode Recap: "Pilot" Season 1, Episode 1

On the series premiere of the Melrose Place reboot, we meet the chic residents of 4616 Melrose Place, the Spanish-style apartment complex with the familiar-looking pool. Right off the bat, there's a mystery to solve, so little time is wasted on pesky exposition.

After watching the Melrose Place pilot episode approximately 86 times, I can say one thing equivocally: I really like the song, Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock (Without Rap)," that opens this episode. That is all.

About everything else, I'm of two minds. One says: "Hooray! It's campy, mindless fun." The other says: "Dialogue makes my brain hurt." Which mind is right? Hard to say! So instead of deconstructing every last detail of the pilot (I've also seen the second episode, which is equally as fun), let's just sketch the broad strokes and meet the fabulous denizens of Melrose Place, shall we?

Jonah (Michael Rady) and Riley (Jessica Lucas)
What's Their Deal? Jonah is an aspiring filmmaker and Riley is a teacher. On their five-year anniversary, Jonah pops the question. Though Riley asks for 24 hours to think about it, she ultimately accepts.
Shocking Development While acting as videographer at a famous movie mogul's daughter's birthday party, he catches said mogul — with his camera — making out with one of his daughter's underage friends. The mogul offers Jonah $100,000 to produce his next screenplay. The struggling Jonah accepts the obvious bribe, to make a better life for him and Riley.
Merciless Tease At Ella's request, Jonah will install voyeuristic security cameras in the Place's courtyard, through which he'll get a new perspective on Riley and Auggie's friendship.

David (Shaun Sipos)
What's His Deal? He's got major daddy issues, but wouldn't you if Michael Mancini (see below) was your dad? It's also clear that he has some unresolved feelings for Sydney, so much so that he's briefly implicated in her murder (spoiler alert! see below), but Ella bails him out.
Shocking Development He used to sleep with Sydney, who used to be married to... Michael, David's father. But don't worry: Sydney said David was better in the sack than his pops. So there's that.
Merciless Tease Though he's presented as a trust-fund baby, David actually has a job, and it's a doozy.

Michael Mancini (Thomas Calabro)
What's His Deal? He's just as smug and oafish as he used to be, but now he's driving a sweet Mercedes that seems to indicate that his wealth and power have grown in the intervening years. His relationship with his son, David, is chilly, and he exposits that David's mother has died. His relationship with Sydney is still complicated, and it's revealed that he might still be carrying on with her in some fashion.
Shocking Development Near the end of the episode, Michael calls home, revealing that he has an as-yet-unseen family, of which David is apparently not a part.
Merciless Tease We'll find out how exactly Michael and David are related — and who David's late mom is.

Ella (Katie Cassidy)
What's Her Deal? She's a high-powered publicist, and everyone she meets is a potential client. In the pilot, she helps David with his little police problem. She also got Jonah the birthday-party gig, at which he hands off his reel to a famous movie mogul. (That was the plan anyway...) In flashback, Sydney threatens to evict Ella for some reason.
Shocking Development Is it really so shocking these days? Ella likes boys and girls. There, I said it.
Merciless Tease Nude cellphone pics will help her land a famous client, thus saving her job.

Lauren (Stephanie Jacobsen)
What's Her Deal? She's a hard-working medical student who is having trouble paying the bills, especially after her father is laid off from his job (topical!).
Shocking Development A date suggests that maybe he can help her out with her bills, say to the tune of $5,000, if only she'll sleep with him. Instead of being profoundly insulted and humiliated by this proposition, she accepts it — and Melrose's doctor-by-day, hooker-by-night is born!
Merciless Tease Next week, Lauren is full-on Pretty Woman, but her bedside manner (that is, when she's hooking) leaves something to be desired.

Sydney Andrews (Laura Leighton)
What's Her Deal? Sydney is the landlady of Melrose Place, and as such, she's all up in everybody's business. Her sweet-and-sour seduction skills are still intact, and — goody! — the 12-stepper has totally fallen off the wagon.
Shocking Development Um, she's killed. Yes, it's Sydney we see doing the dead-man's float in the Place's pool, and everyone's a suspect.
Merciless Tease Sydney's not going anywhere. Leighton is signed on to appear in flashbacks throughout the entire first season. Her scenes will reportedly flesh out the tenants' backstories, and perhaps explain why everyone had a motive to want her dead.

Violet (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz)
What's Her Deal? She's a sweet lil' ol' country girl who just moved into the Place. She's wide-eyed and innocent, except, you know, since it's television, she totally isn't.
Shocking Development In one of the episode's final scenes, Violet snatches a portrait of Sydney from the poolside shrine the tenants have erected and stuffs it in her Ally-Sheedy-in-Breakfast Club-like purse.
Merciless Tease Violet is looking for her birth mother, and she thinks she may have found her. Also: She's totally a stalker, so watch out, Auggie!

Auggie (Colin Egglesfield)
What's His Deal? He's a recovering alcoholic and a chef, and aside remarks in the pilot indicate that he's had flings with many of the ladies of the Place.
Shocking Development In the final scene, we see Auggie burning some bloody clothes. Destroying the evidence?
Merciless Tease In the next episode, we'll see how Sydney and Auggie met. He'll also help Violet get a job.
