Mel becomes suspicious of Joe and fears that he's a spy trying to catch her unlawful brother-in-law, so she installs a nanny cam to keep a closer eye on him. Meanwhile, Mel worries that Ryder has fallen victim to a school bully.
Mel is pleased that Lennox is going out with the mayor's son, but she's unaware that his good-boy image is just a facade. Elsewhere, Ryder fulfills his community-service duties with help from an eccentric neighbor (Katherine Helmond). Ted McGinley guest stars as the mayor.
Joe imparts financial advice in a Web series he creates, and Mel becomes an investor in the show. Mel also offers Joe some feedback, though he'd rather she didn't. Elsewhere, Lennox gets a crush on her nerdy tutor.
Joe starts dating Mel's new personal trainer, but both Mel and Joe find it difficult to share her with one another. Elsewhere, Lennox gets jealous when her former geeky pal starts going out with her friend.
Unhappy with recent setbacks in his life, Joe reluctantly attends his college reunion. Mel then tries to help him out by arriving at the event and telling people she's his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Lennox and Ryder attempt to throw a party.
Mel is skeptical about allowing an eager Lennox to do some modeling, but then Lennox becomes hesitant when the modeling-agency owner (Vivica A. Fox) makes her uncomfortable. Elsewhere, Joe gives Ryder tips on dating.
In Part 1 of the two-part Season 1 finale, Mel and Joe are concerned about Lennox attending an all-night party with her boyfriend following a school dance, so Mel persuades Joe to go after her. Elsewhere, Ryder stops backing down to Holly.
