David Gregory has officially been named the new moderator of Meet the Press.
The longtime NBC chief White House correspondent will take over the role, vacated in June by the death of Tim Russert, on Sunday, Dec. 14. Interim moderator, Tom Brokaw, formally introduced Gregory at the end of his broadcast Sunday, ending weeks of rumors and speculation.

Question: I hope I'm not the only one feeling that NBC's pre-taped segment with Tom Brokaw discussing the political turmoil of China was tasteless. It was an awful, politically slanted piece of garbage. This is a sporting event, not Meet the Press. The night was supposed to celebrate the world, China and athletes, but instead I was given a five-minute piece meant to "keep this Olympics in perspective" and practically seed hate for the Chinese. Its funny, right after that taped segment, Matt Lauer says "live" while commentating that he doesn't want the show to have a political message and refused to bring up any politics during the show. I know you mentioned it in your most recent Dispatch (more as a play-by-play), but what were your thoughts on the segment?

Late host of Meet the Press Tim Russert may no longer be a part of the NBC News family, but the Russert name will carry on at the Peacock as his son Luke joins on as a new correspondent for the network. According to The New York Times, young Russert's first assignment will begin late August at the Democratic National Convention in Denver followed by the Republican National Convention in St. Paul at the beginning of September. President of NBC News Steve Capus is confident "Luke will bring a unique perspective" to covering this election especially since "so much attention has turned to the youth vote." Prior to his father's death on June 13, Luke Russert had established a name for himself in the media world having co-hosted an XM radio show with political pundit James Carville for two years. Question: Some friends and I were discussing who should take over moderating duties on Meet the Press. A lot of people have been voicing interest in Tom Brokaw or Dick Gregory, both of which seem like logical choices. I was wondering what the odds are of NBC reaching outside of the white male box and choosing political correspondent Andrea Mitchell. She's smart, serious, and knows her politics. That's my pick. Answer: My initial response to this, before NBC News made it official over the weekend, was that while Andrea Mitchell is at least as deserving as any of the other NBC News veterans, it would make the most symbolic sense for Tom Brokaw to be the steward of Meet the Press during this wrenching transition period. His experience and gravitas, and his availability, make him the perfect authority figure to fill the void left by Tim Russert's unexpected and tragic passing. Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw has been named interim moderator of Meet the Press. He will moderate MTP beginning Sunday, June 29 and will serve in that post through November's presidental election.Former host Tim Russert died of a heart attack June 13. Brokaw also hosted a special MTP edition last week that recounted Russert's life and career.
