  • "But for the Grace of God" | TV Show Recaps | 1/15/2008
The opening really got me; both the eeriness of the car wheel spinning slowly and then the hand of the young female victim frantically trying to grab hold of her phone. I felt exactly like Allison did when she woke up and shook, (and later when she woke up crying). Then she asked Joe how Ariel was. When she returned to the dream it was Ariel in the car hanging upside down and I jumped out of my seat. I really related to Ariel and Allison’s relationship in this episode of Medium. I’m... read more be the first to leave a comment

  • I was really looking forward ... | Matt Roush | 1/14/2008
Question: I was really looking forward to a new episode of Medium. I've always liked this show, especially the family dynamics. It's so rare to see a stable family portrayed on television this way, and there's an element of mystery to the storylines, which can be a lot of fun. So it's with great sadness that this goes on my "don't watch" list, along with SVU and CSI. The graphic depiction of the murdered little boy was just too much for me. I do not find murdered children entertaining... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Ratings: BCS Wins War; Zoey 101's Big "Goodbye" | Today's News: Our Take | 1/8/2008
A few ratings highlights from Monday night:• Fox's coverage of the BCS showdown between OSU and LSU averaged 21.58 million total viewers, more than double the closest contender. Its draw in key demos was also off the charts.• ABC's Dance War averaged about 11 mil over its two-hour premiere, besting NBC's American Gladiators (10.9 mil, down nine percent from its premiere) in the 8 o'clock hour.• At 10, Medium (9.57 mil, up 140 thou from its previous season premiere) topped a CSI:... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • "And Then" | TV Show Recaps | 1/8/2008
Medium's fourth season opener left me speechless. Not only was there singing and dancing, and mice and marionettes, but Anjelica Huston stopped by for her first of many visits to the show. Ahhh, so good, I don't even know where to start. Let's just get this out of the way. This was a heart-wrenching show. The premise, a very small boy gets lured to his death by a sick-o with a penchant for dancing. There have been so many stories recently about small children being killed lately, I found this... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Medium Preview: Allison Forms a New Alliance | Today's News: Our Take | 1/7/2008
Things are shaking up for the happy DuBois family in the new season of Medium. When last we saw her, Allison (Patricia Arquette) was dealing with being "outed" as a psychic by her supposed friend P.D. McCall (Neve Campbell), who turned out to be a reporter — and who turned out to fulfill Allison's prophecy by being murdered. The aftermath of that revelation means that Allison has lost her job with the D.A.'s office and tries to find gainful employment by joining forces with private... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • NBC's Medium: Why You Should Size It Up | Today's News: Our Take | 1/6/2008
The when: Season 4 premieres Monday, Jan. 7, at 10 pm/ET.Why watch?: The beauty of Medium is its appeal to family-driven drama fans and crime/mystery buffs alike — without being cheeseball. The show centers on soccer mom-psychic-medium Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette). Each episode shows her struggle to maintain a happy and healthy marriage and home life while using her gifts to work with the Phoenix District Attorney's office to solve gruesome murders. Allison has visions of crimes that... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • NBC Strikes Back with "More Original Programming Than 1Q 2007" | Today's News: Our Take | 12/6/2007
NBC has at long last unveiled its own "strike schedule," and there's little to be surprised by here, as it has been leaked out in drips and drabs over recent weeks. Of note, NBC touts the slate as offering "significantly more hours of original programming than was ever the case in the first quarter of 2007."The highlights:• As of Jan. 1, The Biggest Loser returns with new two-hour blocks, followed by SVU.• Celebrity Apprentice airs Thursdays at 9 starting Jan. 3; as of Feb. 7,... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Exclusive: Find Out When Medium Returns! | Today's News: Our Take | 12/6/2007
My sixth sense is telling me that Medium is headed back to Monday night! Actually, it's a well-placed NBC source that's doing the blabbing, but whatever. The bottom line is that the Patricia Arquette starrer will kick off its fourth season on Monday, Jan. 7 at 10 pm, where it'll round out a new strike-imposed Monday lineup that includes American Gladiators at 8 pm and Deal or No Deal at 9 pm. An official announcement from the Peacock is expected later today.Thoughts? read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Everyone is concerned that ... | Matt Roush | 11/9/2007
Question: Everyone is concerned that with the writers' strike, we'll all be left with nothing to watch except reality shows. And being the couch potato that I am (with absolutely no interest in any reality show), I see the point. But people are saying the only scripted shows that will be left after January are Lost and, to a lesser degree, 24, and I have to disagree. Since Jericho is due back after the Christmas holidays, won't there be a stockpile of those? And the cable series Monk, Psych and... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Do you think that there is ... | Matt Roush | 10/8/2007
Question: Do you think that there is any chance that NBC might air Medium after Heroes (if Journeyman bombs)? What about on another night? Will this wonderful show make it? Answer: Y'know, I had a dream I'd be getting this question. The game plan for now, at least the last anyone heard, is for Medium to take up residence on Sunday nights in January once the football season ends. That could, of course, change, depending on the network's fall fortunes. But from the time Heroes took off, I... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Medium's Big on Oscar Winner Anjelica Huston | Today's News: Our Take | 8/14/2007
Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston has been tapped to visit Medium during the NBC drama's fourth season, playing an investigator for a firm called Ameritips who strikes an unusual bargain with Allison. "When we decided to embark on a six-episode arc involving a formidable female character, the challenge was to find an actress who could hold the screen with Patricia [Arquette] while creating sparks of her own," series creator Glenn Gordon Caron explains to the Hollywood Reporter. "I couldn't... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Paul Blackthorne Takes on Big Shots | Today's News: Our Take | 8/8/2007
Paul Blackthorne may not be a household name... yet. But the British actor, who recently starred as Harry Dresden on the now-defunct Sci Fi Channel fantasy series The Dresden Files, has guest-starred on Medium, Deadwood and Monk. He’s also racked up recurring roles on 24 and ER. Next up? The chameleon actor will play a Wall Street CEO and costar with Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus, Joshua Malina and Dylan McDermott on the new ABC drama Big Shots. “He’s what’s described as... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Sofia Vassilieva Chats About Medium | Today's News: Our Take | 7/2/2007
It may be tough being a teen in real life, but playing one on TV is a whole different story. We caught up with Sofia Vassilieva, who plays Ariel Dubois on Medium, at CBS/Paramount's "Mix It Up with Young Stars" event on June 29 at the Lucky Strike in Hollywood, to chat about her life on and off the set and what's next for her character. TV Guide: What's coming up for you next season?Vassilieva: Actually, nothing. Nothing yet. • Check out all the TV series ... | Matt Roush | 6/22/2007
Question: Check out all the TV series about to enter their fourth seasons within the next calendar year: Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, The Office, House, CSI: NY, Medium and Battlestar Galactica. (You could even add Rescue Me and Entourage to the list, too.) I guess I don't really have a question, I just wanted to point out how successful the 2004/2005 developmental season was for the history of television. Answer: An interesting observation, especially when you... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Twenty Things I Learned This Past TV Season | Today's News: Our Take | 5/23/2007
    1. I learned how to type "Isaiah" correctly on the first try. (Yeah, that lesson became kind of imperative.)2. I learned that creating a keyboard shortcut for "from O.C. creator Josh Schwartz" would have saved me loads of time come pilot season.3. I learned that no matter how you ask, no matter which one you are talking to, you will never get an American Idol castoff to pick their favorite to win. Good manners, you say? Top-secret contract clause, I theorize.4. I learned that unless a new... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • May 16, 2007: “Everything Will Come to a Head” | TV Show Recaps | 5/17/2007
Season finales make me wistful. The third part of a trilogy bringing Neve Campbell and Jason Priestley to the Dubois roost wrapped the season up nicely. I love when everything comes together and there are no loose ends. This show, while not quite as fantastic as last week’s, still held its own, especially when you consider Allison’s special talents and the risks she had to take to solve the murder of her friend/enemy PD MacColl. Everyone got a spot in this show — Manny, Scanlon... read more be the first to leave a comment

DOND is a game show juggernaut. Heroes will have a make or break sophomore season and Heroes: Origins better not be too gimmicky. • NBC: Parsing the Peacock's Moves | Matt Roush | 5/14/2007
First, the good news (that we've been cheering since late last week): NBC's Hail Mary reprieve to the low-rated but critically worshipped Friday Night Lights is something to celebrate. True, the move to Fridays is a bit worrisome. Those with long memories will recall the fast fade of a similarly themed high-school football drama, Against the Grain (starring a then-unknown Ben Affleck), which aired on Fridays in 1993. Its failure was largely attributed to being scheduled on a night when much of... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • May 9, 2007: "Heads Will Roll" | TV Show Recaps | 5/10/2007
Thanks for cutting me some slack getting the Medium blog up. Now without further ado I give you:One of the best openings I’ve seen on this show. One of the best shows this season; I still have goosebumps. One creepily believable performance from Neve Campbell as sneaky, underhanded reporter, PD MacColl.Other great titles for this show would have been, “Life Needs Your Attention” or “Stop the Murderer, Stop the Murder”. Where have I heard something like that before? Any... read more be the first to leave a comment
