This was a completely riveting show! I was literally on the edge of my seat. I am still having heart palpitations!
The show starred the fantastic Adam Goldberg who was incredibly intense in the role of Bruce, a dying man who has lost his job and finds he has few options to protect his family once he is gone.
Dazed and Confused wasn't the first thing I saw Adam Goldberg in, but it was the movie that I think of whenever I see him. (Besides
The Hebrew Hammer, which was hysterical to say the least.) Adam is a gifted comedic actor, so it was really satisfying to see him in
Medium playing a very unfunny character.
The show opened with Allison speaking of dread and its many manifestations. My favorite lines from that were:
"Dread gnaws at you."
"Dread is worrying about something you can't do anything about."
I've had that horrifying feeling and it is not something you can easily shake. This is going to be an intense show.
Double dream opening! Al has a dream within a dream where she thought she was awake, but lo and behold, she wasn't and the second time she saw Bruce with a hole in the back of his head - gruesome! Ariel had bad feelings, too. And she was having a bad hair day - her sentiment, not mine. I would kill for hair as thick and gorgeous as that child's!
I found it funny that the crazy Bruce drove a Prius; I don't know why exactly, but it's not exactly the kind of car you would think a crazed killer would drive. Am I right?
The only funny line in the whole show was from the pregnant engineer who said her baby didn't like coffee, because every time she took a sip, the baby forced it back up. Holding her swollen belly, she said, "I like coffee, maybe it's not
Who is the guy playing the boss? He's been on every show under the sun and I can't place him. Someone, please come to my rescue. I think Joe's had like a thousand different bosses in three seasons. Mr. Dylan Cravits probably won't be alive at the end of the show anyhow, so we might as well add him to the pile.
I don't know what an eighth-grade principal should be like, but Ariel's sucks! He was watching the TV with the news story about Aerodytech and he didn't know her father works there? It has to be one of the biggest employers in the area. Adults should trust kids sometimes to know a thing or two. Ariel's mother was exactly the person she needed to talk to, so who is he to decide otherwise? It's not like she was smoking out back or drinking in the girls' bathroom.
I thought it was very strange, very strange indeed, that when Allison got to the crime scene, she ran towards Miguel and called him, "Mr. District Attorney!" Why did Allison refer to the DA as the DA? Wouldn't she just call him by his name, or "Sir"? Anyone have a theory?
When Bruce shot Aaron, I jumped out of my seat; that was a little too intense for me. And at that point I knew Bruce would shoot someone else. I also knew it wouldn't be Joe; he's so levelheaded. And he would never shoot the pregnant lady. But Cravits? Well, frankly, folks, he had it coming, if you ask me. You want to handle a crazed former employee weeks away from death with kid gloves, not by humiliating him. That was some seriously bad judgment.
And finally, all was set right with the world and we got to see a nice gratuitous chest shot of hunky Joe! Life is good! What a ridiculously good show, don't you agree? I'm going to think about this one for quite a while.
Next week, Patricia's real-life brother David Arquette directs
Medium when Allison and her screen brother duke it out over opposing dreams. I look forward to seeing you all back here next week.
