Medium! We get to finally hear the story of how Allison and Joe met. Ariel is nonplussed that their chance meeting happened at a place called "Fat Bobby's." But the truth of the matter was that their paths had crossed three years earlier at a science fair.
That's not as uncommon as one might think. When I dated my first boyfriend, he took me to a concert where the guy I dated after him was playing in the headlining band. I didn't meet boyfriend No. 2 that night, but had taken a picture of the band and when we started going out many years later I found that picture and just couldn't believe the coincidence.
Bridge gets excited thinking about how they might have met years early and she could really be 11. But of course, we all know, had Al and Joe met three years early and gotten pregnant, they would have had an entirely different set of children. And we love Ariel, Bridgette and little Marie!
Peri Gilpin of
Frasier fame showed up as young Ally's mother. Nice to have friends in high places... after all, Kelsey Grammer, Frasier himself, is the executive producer of
Medium. I always liked Peri, and she was perfect in the role of the divorced single mother who waits tables to make ends meet.
All of Allison's dreams in this ep bring us back to when she was 16 or 17 and really starting to try to understand the dreams she'd been having. Seeing the future provides her with the courage to be more of a participant in what is happening to her. This is one time when she actually got to change the course of history and did so with a plate of burnt chocolate-chip cookies. (Peri looks great in that green waitress uniform, but it's a good thing she's not the cook in the restaurant!)
Joe stood idly by when Allison runs into Stephen Campbell in the grocery store, and even though we found out it's just a dream, Joe came across as a little jealous. It's Allison's dream and I guess if it were me, I'd dream my husband was a little jealous, too.
One thing struck me as a little weird in that grocery-store scene: Stephen said he didn't have a wife or kids, or any more dogs. Later (or rather earlier, since we are traveling back and forth in time), when Ally's cat is gruesomely killed, her mother suggested it could have been a dog (or a coyote), but the loop never gets closed as to whether Stephen had a dog. You'd think that they might have had at least one romp in the yard when he was moving in. Though we know he killed that fluffy white ball of happiness before ending his own life. And as well he should. How could you kill a cat? Especially so violently. Although, when my cat unspools an entire roll of toilet paper and then shreds it to confetti while strewing it all over my house, I must say, evil thoughts may have crossed my mind.
Our potential killer also grew quite a bit since high school, when he was shorter than Ally. In Allison's dreams he towers over Al and Scanlon. Again, if you're dreaming about an old flame, I say taller is better. He was also a lot cuter as a teenager, even if he was angst-ridden.
The music in this show was fantastic. I heard some Duran Duran in there and then "Sister Christian" just brought it all full circle for me!
My only other issue with the show was why Al's mother kept giving her sleeping pills. I mean, is it really all right to be giving a teenager so many pills? I know today it's just part and parcel to ply kids with a pill for this and a pill for that, but it's no wonder Allison drinks whenever she wants to stop dreaming. Thankfully, she's not a big boozer or anything, and we all need a little respite from bad dreams.
This show constantly amazes me with the different ways the writers find to tell the stories. Just when you think it's a formula and you know where you're going, the course changes and off you go down another road altogether. I think that's what keeps the show so fresh for me. I know a lot of other shows just use that formula and each week you basically see the same thing over and over again, but
Medium luckily doesn't fall into that rut.
Here's hoping I don't offend too many readers out there, but I recently watched, or rather tried to watch, an ep of
The Ghost Whisperer, since the handsome Jamie Barber, Apollo from
Battlestar Galactica, was a guest star and I'm a huge fan of his. I know people who love
The Ghost Whisperer, but it didn't have any of the warmth or genuineness of
Medium.
Raines will premiere next week with a similar premise: Jeff Goldblum doesn't see dead people as dead people, he just conjures them up as figments of his imagination to help him figure out who killed them. I watched the pilot ep and I have to say,
Medium is still the best in this category. Patricia Arquette is so likable, and the show is believable to me. I remain faithful to the original!
