The versatile actress gave the variety format another try the same season that `Mary' folded. Moore's new series was a `show within a show' about the backstage life of a successful TV variety star named Mary McKinnon. But despite guest appearances by Lucille Ball, Mike Douglas, Beatrice Arthur, Henny Youngman, Gene Kelly, Johnny Mathis and Dick Van Dyke, `The Mary Tyler Moore Hour' faired little better than `Mary' and was canceled after three months.
