New Season Reviews: Selfie, Manhattan Love Story, PBS's Makers On Women in Comedy

How I'd love it if any of this season's dismal new wave of romantic comedies, all vying to be the next How I Met Your Mother, made me LOL. Sadly, I'm more inclined to search for a "cringe" emoticon, especially where ABC's two new Tuesday night entries are concerned.

The less objectionable is Selfie (8/7c), a strained attempt to update Pygmalion to the Instagram era, but coming off more like My Fair Lucy — because this Eliza Doolittle, here called Eliza Dooley (Doctor Who's Karen Gillan), is silly and vapid beyond belief or tolerance.  Read Full Article

Why I'm Giving ABC's Rom-Com Manhattan Love Story a Second Chance (Despite a Bad First Date)

I'll be the first to admit I didn't love the pilot of ABC's Manhattan Love Story. In fact, you could even say I was disappointed. A show about dating, set in New York City is totally up my alley. But months after watching the less-than-stellar pilot, I got an opportunity to watch the show's third episode, while also voicing my concerns — mostly about the heavy use of voiceover — to the creator Jeff Lowell. I came out of both my conversation and the screening pleasantly surprised.

The verdict is still out regarding ABC's middling batch of new shows for the fall — as often happens, many of the network's more tantalizing projects are being held until midseason — but as ABC stepped into the TCA press-tour spotlight on Tuesday, the vibe was unusually positive because of one overarching hot-button issue: diversity.
