In the second-season opener, the girls question Sasha's approach with the National Committee as selections are made for a meet in France. In addition, a newly determined Payson wants to reclaim her top ranking and be invited to compete in France.
Olympic winner Austin Tucker causes a stir at the Rock when he tries to move the girls' equipment. So Sasha decides to stage a battle for gym space, pitting the girls against the boys and making them compete on each other's equipment.
The gym presents its coveted Rocky Awards, and Lauren wants to win Miss Congeniality so badly that she stoops to dirty tactics. Meanwhile, Emily and Payson set goals for themselves that appear insurmountable.
Rivalries and anxieties surface as the girls begin practicing their new floor routines. Among their problems: Lauren's need to outshine Emily, and Payson's difficulty achieving gracefulness in her routine.
Ellen Beals tries to make things difficult for Kaylie, Emily and Lauren at the final National Team practice before tryouts for the World Team begin. In addition, the girls' rebellious reputations work against them.
The truth comes out about Emily's new scholarship, increasing tension between her and Lauren's families. Meanwhile, another secret is revealed when more people find out about Carter and Lauren's relationship; and Austin is not pleased with Kaylie.

The girls begin working with a new coach who takes a relaxed approach to coaching. Payson and Lauren then learn they must compete to be team captain. Elsewhere, Kaylie's return to the gym is delayed because she has to focus on her health.
The girls widen their horizons by swapping routines, but Payson struggles with Lauren's spicy moves on the balance beam. Meanwhile, Emily laments how gymnastics prevents her from being a regular teen; and Kaylie schemes to get back to training.
While traveling to Budapest for a meet, the girls track down Sasha in an unexpected place and attempt to persuade him to be their coach again. Elsewhere, Kaylie works on her recovery and tries to focus on who she is aside from being a gymnast.
Kaylie's homecoming at the Rock turns sour when Sasha informs her she's not on the World's team and she discovers Emily's spot has gone to Kelly Parker. Meanwhile, Summer struggles with telling Sasha about her engagement as Lauren's excitement about the wedding grows.
The girls prepare for World's, but personal struggles, including Payson's financial woes and Kaylie's recovery from anorexia, distract them. Meanwhile, Sasha is also losing focus thanks to Summer's upcoming nuptials.
