There's chaos at the gym in the wake of Marty and Lauren's exits, so Payson, Kaylie and Emily set out to confront the two defectors about their decision to leave. Meanwhile, Lauren is not pleased with the reception she gets at her new gym.
A mother-daughter fashion show is held as a fund-raiser for Nationals, and the family bonding results in disharmony. The friction includes Kaylie feeling ignored, Emily being embarrassed by her mom and Payson believing the show is a waste of time. Meanwhile, Lauren is unhappy to be paired up with her father's girlfriend, Summer.
The Cruz family host a send-off party for Nationals while their guests deal with their own agendas: Payson secretly obtains some medicine; Lauren takes a final shot at breaking up Carter and Kaylie; and Chloe hides her financial struggles from Emily.
The girls go to Boston to compete in Nationals. While Payson is obsessed with beating Kelly Parker, her teammates lack focus: Kaylie feels torn between Carter and her dad, Lauren is angry at her parents and Carter, and Emily fears she's in over her head.
Kaylie discovers that being national champion isn't only about celebrating, and Payson has nothing to celebrate as she struggles to deal with her back injury (and the cortisone she took for it). Meanwhile, Damon plans a romantic evening with Emily; and Chloe enlists Summer's aid in running things at the Rock.
The girls are displeased to have Marty back as their coach, so they try to get him ousted. Meanwhile, Sasha attempts to find a new way for Payson to fit in at the gym; Kaylie confronts Carter about his betrayal; and Razor tutors Emily in math.
Kaylie heads to California to attend an A-list party, and the rest of the girls tag along. While there, Payson consults a prominent back specialist. Elsewhere, Chloe tries Internet dating; and someone secretly houses a homeless Carter.
Payson feels lost as she enters the frenzied world of public school, and then she clashes with the queen bee. Elsewhere, Sasha tries to liven up the gym's annual open-house event, but one of his creative ideas displeases Kaylie and Nicky.
A surprising romantic gesture greets Payson at school. Meanwhile, Emily gets anxious when she doesn't hear from Damon; Kaylie wrestles with her feelings for Nicky; and Summer and Sasha clash over her proposal to hold a Valentine's Day mixer.
The girls all attend the prom at Payson's school, and Emily unexpectedly sees Damon there. Meanwhile, Lauren discovers that her dad is dating Chloe; Carter tries to reconnect with Kaylie; and a doctor suggests an experimental procedure for Payson's back.
Emily finds out that her mother is dating Steve after Lauren confronts Chloe about the situation. Meanwhile, Payson has an appointment with a top-ranked back surgeon; and the National Team must prove their worth and step up their game.
The girls raise the bar with their training in preparation for a competition against the Chinese team, but troubles at home and confidence issues plague them. Meanwhile, the moms hold a fund-raiser to cover the Chinese team's travel expenses.
Kaylie is torn about whether to compete with her team in the upcoming Chinese Invitational or listen to the National Committee and MJ, who tell her to back out of the meet. Elsewhere, Emily has to nail her new vault, but she has trouble staying focused because of Damon.
In the first-season finale, the girls feel unprepared to compete against the Chinese team. Among their obstacles: Kaylie's decision doesn't sit well with her teammates, and Emily struggles with a crisis of confidence as well as heartbreak.
