Mad Men Episode Recap: "Christmas Comes But Once a Year" Season 4, Episode 2

In this episode of Mad Men, it's Christmas, but Don Draper is far from jolly. Rather, he spends even more time than usual hitting the bottle, stumbling home late at night and wandering through his life outside the office in a scotch-induced haze. Meanwhile, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce throws an impromptu Christmas party to appease Lucky Strike heir Lee Garner Jr., whose odd demands Roger is begrudgingly forced to meet.

Out in Ossining, Glen Bishop is back, and he's turned his affections away from Betty and toward Sally. Creepy as ever, Glenn offers Sally tutelage in how to deal with divorce and a new father, while also vandalizing every room in the Draper house — except Sally's. In her own romantic entanglement, Peggy dodges having sex with boyfriend Mark, even asking the advice of Freddy Rumsen, who makes a welcome — and sober — return. Peggy, of course, tires of Freddy's advice, and insults him by calling him old fashioned.

But the most egregious mistreatment comes from Don, who after having his advances rejected by his nurse next door and a market research expert who has been testing the SCDP employees, sets his sights on Allison. Not only is Don going down the road he so criticized Roger Sterling for travelling with Jane, but Don also heartlessly ignored the implications of his actions the next day. The "Christmas bonus" he gave the heartbroken Allison may as well have been a payment to Allison for services rendered, which as we saw in the last episode, Don is used to these days. (Also, the look on Don's face when he did it showed a recognition of just how cold he was being, but not in a way that seemed very remorseful. How dark is this guy going to get?)

I unfortunately am out of the office covering the Television Critics Association summer press tour, and will be unable to post an in-depth recap until later today or (more likely) later in the week. But please use the space below to begin commenting on the episode. I will try to update my post with a more complete analysis as soon as possible.
