The Monday Playlist: A Birth Switcheroo, Syfy Cliffhangers, a Major Complication

D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson

It's not a wonderful alt-life on ABC Family's Switched at Birth (Monday, 8/7c), as this endearing family drama imagines a "what if" scenario that hinges on Regina having gone public about the switch after she discovered it when the girls were but 3 years old. (The fact that she kept it a secret until their adolescence was the crux of an argument last week between her and John Kennish that ended with him collapsing from what appeared to be a heart attack.)

The Monday Playlist: Siberia vs. Dome, Carson on TCM, Gideon's Army on HBO

Sam, Daniel

For many a new show, airing on NBC is its own form of being stranded in Siberia. And so it is with Siberia, a clunky new thriller in the guise of a reality-adventure competition show — take all of the we're-not-here-to-make-friends clichés and add violent mysterious death, shot in a Blair Witch Project-meets-Survivor style. This weird drama/reality hybrid — not as silly as ABC's Whodunnit?, but just as unconvincing — has the terrible luck to arrive on the scene going head to head (Monday, 10/9c) with CBS's Under the Dome, a week after the Stephen King project opened to blockbuster ratings.

Question: With the introduction this year of new comedies like the promising The New Normal and the dreadful Partners featuring prominent characters who are gay, I was wondering what you think of the current state of gay characters represented on TV. In some ways while I am thrilled to see more representation of the gay community on television, I have to admit I was disheartened by the same stereotypical, flamboyant gay characters once again being represented. Haven't we moved past this? I do think we have some very positive portrayals today in shows like Glee and Grey's Anatomy, but this just seems like a step backwards. What are your thoughts? — Rob

Summer TV's Hits & Misses

Gordon Ramsay; Savannah Guthrie

It was a summer that won't be remembered fondly, at least by the broadcast networks. Despite a flurry of new shows, from CBS' Dogs in the City to ABC's Glass House, there wasn't much to crow about — at least until NBC's Summer Olympics ratings juggernaut came along. Cable fared better, launching new hits like A&E's Longmire and TNT's Perception and opening events like History's Hatfields & McCoys to big numbers. Here are some of this summer's highs and lows. read more
