Life Unexpected Episode Recap: "Formal Reformed" Season 1, Episode 9

In this week's episode of Life Unexpected, Lux attends the winter formal, the site of Lux's conception years prior, which doesn't sit well with Cate, who is chaperoning, and Baze, who finds a condom in Lux's room.

Sorry for missing last week, guys! Sometimes even two DVRs is not enough, let alone CW changing the airtime. So here we go...

The episode opens on another day at the radio station. Cate and Ryan are having an easier time working together, but Ryan is clearly uncomfortable about Cate's openness about discussing sex. Cate explains that she still hasn't had much contact with Lux, and Ryan seems to generally show interest. Mind you, that's the last we see of him for the whole episode.

Meanwhile, Jones asks Lux to the winter formal and she reluctantly agrees to go. Later, Lux is studying with Math and her formal date is revealed to Baze, who is ecstatic she's going with the football jock. Math points out how the football jock is usually the jerk, namely Baze for sleeping with Cate again.

Speak of the devil, Cate arrives to try to smooth things over with Lux. The pair go shopping for a formal dress, but there's a strict no-talking policy. Cate's attempts at reconciliation, including buying her an expensive dress, fail.

Back at the bar, Baze tries to make good with Math for sleeping with Cate, on which Math had a crush in high school. "I went through a lot that day, emotions were heightened and you weren't exactly on my mind," says Baze. "Frankly, if you were, I think we'd have a much more troubling situation on our hands." Baze then suggests that Math ask Cate on a date.

Baze continues to go on about being excited for Lux to go to formal, but Math points out that that's where she was originally conceived. Frightened, Baze decides he needs to have the sex talk with Lux. Before that, Bug shows up at Baze's. He tries to kiss Lux, but she isn't having any of it. A flicker of a smile comes over Lux as Bug says he wants to change for her.

Math shows up at Cate's for an awkward, hilarious scene. He fumbles through asking her out, and ends up chickening out by suggesting they chaperone the dance together.

After having some, um, sexy time with Bug, Lux gets stuck in a sex talk with Baze and Abby, Cate's sister. He wants her to put sex off until college. Little does he know, his little girl was just scrumping with her still-in-hiding boyfriend on the very couch on which he's sitting. Sweet loophole: She just has to promise not to have sex with Jones to get Baze off her back. Unfortunately, Bug hears Jones' name and freaks. He definitely hasn't changed, Lux says.

A nervous, excited Math picks up Cate for their "date." It still hasn't sunk in for Cate that this is a real date, even when he puts a not-meant-to-be-ironic pink-carnation corsage on her wrist. Elsewhere, Baze gives Jones his own sex talk before he and Lux head off to the dance. However, when Baze finds a condom (the one from Bug) in Lux's room, he decides to hightail it to the dance to make sure his daughter doesn't get knocked up herself.

Once Lux realizes Cate is chaperoning the dance, she has no problem partaking in what I like to call Mr. Flask. Cate, on the other hand, realizes being back at the winter formal isn't such a good idea. "It's not like Baze is here to impregnate me and reject me again," says Cate. Cue Baze. The pair argues loudly, prompting Lux to leave the dance with Jones.

Baze pulls Jones out of his car, yelling that he is not allowed to de-virginize his kid. (Guess what, Dad? It's too late. That stray condom belongs to Bug, not Jones.) Before taking off after Jones, Lux tells Baze he's just as bad a dad as Cate is a mom. Ruh-roh. She's going to start running out of family members with whom to crash.

Cate tells Baze that he's constantly ruining her life, but he replies — wisely — that she can't blame him for everything. "I am not the root of all your problems," he yells, telling her to let it go. She explains that she heard him bash her the morning after they slept together in high school and how crushed it made her feel. "You know that after we slept together, I actually thought we were going to date," she says. Wow, Baze was really a jerk in high school and Cate says he hasn't changed a bit.

Lux tries to stop Jones from leaving, but he's upset that she slept with Bug. It turns out, Jones really likes Lux, and the feeling is not mutual. While trying to find a hallway in which to cry, Lux runs into Cate and the pair slowly come to terms with their predicament.

The episode closes with many love hits and misses: Lux returns to the dance to find a cleaned-up Bug waiting with flowers. They make up with a kiss and all is good for them. Math and Cate dance the night away, both clearly enjoying being just friends. Baze returns to Open Bar to find a soused Abby, which leads to a disastrous hook-up. Cate shows up to try and re-enact their winter-formal memories, minus the backseat sex, in hopes of getting over the past.

Poor Cate. Baze is not a good guy! What say you?
