Life Unexpected Episode Recap: "Family Therapized" Season 1, Episode 10

In this week's episode of Life Unexpected, both Cate and Baze try to get in Lux's good graces by getting Bug a job. Of course, they both happen to let her down, leading their social worker to think they really won't be able to make it as a family. Meanwhile, Ryan and Cate take a step towards reconciliation.

Welcome to another morning in Portland. Ryan and Cate skip the traditional morning sex convo on the radio show to talk about sleeping with each other. Same thing, no? It's more about the morning after cuddling. As they discuss, we see glimpses of Lux and Bug in bed — very cute — then Baze and Abby — not so cute. Also, the ice between Ryan and Cate continues to thaw.

Meanwhile, Bug and Lux awake to a good morning, especially when Bug says he's gotten a job to be a better man for her. Tear. Somehow I think this is still going to end badly. Things are not so good between Baze and Lux, though. She gives him a hard time for butting into her dating life while going behind Cate's back by sleeping with her sister. To fix things, Lux says, he must stop seeing Abby. He agrees as long as she doesn't see Bug anymore. Cue Lux sneaking out to go see Bug.

Cate wakes in the middle of the night to a phone call from the police. Lux was arrested for a curfew violation. This sparks a family fight in front of their social worker, who decides to move up their custody evaluation to the following week. "This arrangement was temporary," she says, "So if you two can't control Lux, we need to find people who can." Even Lux looks scared by that.

The makeshift family meets back at the bar to set their game plan. Lux warns that getting to this point is a bad thing, and her chances of staying with them are not likely. Cate and Baze want Lux to adhere to their rules, but she retorts that they, too, need to change.

Cate's first step towards changing comes in the form of offering Bug a job at the station. Unfortunately, Bug's interview doesn't go as well as planned. Cate has to beg Alice to give Bug the job, but it doesn't work. This turns the gap between Cate and Lux into a gorge.

Elsewhere, Baze tries to break it off with Abby, but it turns into a pep talk on how to help Lux. Light bulb! Baze decides he wants to hire Bug at the bar. He, of course, sets conditions that she can't be sneaking out to Bug's anymore and has to abide by his rules. On Bug's first night of work, he's ahead of the game, which is good because Abby is still waiting at the bar to talk to Baze. He finally breaks it off, but does it for Lux. "You're such a great guy that you're making my ovaries hurt," she says.

Cate then decides to meet Abby at the bar in hopes of using her therapy skills to bridge the gap between she and Lux. It blows up quickly, but Abby does note to Cate that she isn't at fault for once. Lux has some issues she needs to get over. Baze joins the awkward conversation in time for Cate to get pissed at him for helping Bug. "Who cares who helps Bug? Who even cares about Bug?" he says before realizing that Bug is standing right behind them. Oops.

Despite this blowup, Cate insists they go into their evaluation as a united front...that, or lie. We next see a montage of each of them lying about what they had done the night before together. Unfortunately, their stories don't all match up and Fern calls them out immediately, saying she wants to find Lux a foster home. Cate and Baze finally admit their failures, while Lux discovers that she's really just upset Cate isn't there for her.

"Where were you? I was out there my whole life. Where were you all that time? You never even checked. You never wondered what had happened? If I was OK?" Lux spits out, finally admitting how she's felt her whole life. Though Cate says she tried to do the right thing for Lux by giving her up for adoption, Lux retorts that Cate did it all for herself. Baze jumps in trying to take some of the fault, but Lux points it back at Cate, who describes that she had no idea what a good parent was, having a lack of parental units herself. "You matter now," Cate tries to say, but Lux can't forgive her.

Though this looks bad for Cate and Baze, Fern truly sees that they are a family and she lets Lux stay with them. She suggests they try to get their parental rights reinstated. All they have to do now is convince Lux that they'll never leave her again.

Cate slowly tries to pick up the pieces of all that she's broken. First stop is with Lux, who still won't talk to her, but she slips an envelope under the door. Cate then goes to Ryan's and for one mere moment we think there's a reconciliation coming, but she just needs help with Lux. Cate admits that she never held Lux when she was born, that way she wouldn't get attached. She says she's done this with everyone, but she's trying to change. She doesn't need forgiveness, she just wants help.

Baze goes to apologize to Bug, saying that he sees the potential in him. He'd like him to come back to work at the bar. Before making his exit, Baze tosses him a bar key and tells him to think about it. Oh, by the way, Bug does go back to work in the closing moments of the episode and Baze basically asks to be his surrogate father to get in some practice.

Ryan finds Lux along the lake. She's reading the court papers Baze and Cate signed ensuring that she'll be legally adopted by them. She's not quite ready for that yet, but Ryan explains that they're not going to give up on her. If he really does believe that Cate has changed, then why doesn't Ryan forgive her as well, Lux ponders.

Lux sits down with Baze to explain that life was different when they weren't living together. They're fighting more now and she doesn't want that. "I want to go back to being just friends," she says. "It doesn't work like that," he says, noting that he's not going to stop trying to be her dad. Baze then proceeds to Abby's house to get some advice. "My own kid just broke up with me," he says, but she reassures him that it will take time to gain that trust. She then suggests that she and Baze can be more than just a fling, which will show Lux that Baze can be trusted.

The episode closes on Ryan bringing Lux back to Cate's home. She's moving back in! While she can't promise she won't get upset again, or be able to forgive her, she still wants to try to be there. "I just want a chance to make it right with you," Cate says as I shed a tear. Wait for it...there's more. Ryan and Cate share a sweet moment and finally decide to get back together.
