Dick Wolf

Former advertising executive Dick Wolf got his start in television writing for shows like Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. But his greatest accomplishment is Law & Order, which mastered the TV-show-as-brand concept by cornering the market on cops-and-courts procedurals. (This year it ties Gunsmoke's record for longest-running scripted television program.) L&O laid the groundwork for two successor series: Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Wolf, one of the influential television industry players interviewed for TVGuide.com's Best of the Decade section, talked with us about the germ of the idea that led to his gritty TV empire. He also told us what he watches.

Although CBS ran a distant second, the lack of ABC's comedy block helped boost sitcoms The New Adventures of Old Christine (7.6 million viewers) and Gary Unmarried (7.7 million viewers). Christine pulled ... read more

Top Chef: Las Vegas
10/9c Bravo

We now advance to tonight's supersize event (drum roll): the Restaurant Wars challenge. Here, the cooks must manage all matters of a restaurant, including serving, cooking and hosting. The Middle

The Middle
8:30/7:30c ABC
Originally developed — and shelved — for the 2006-07 TV season with Ricki Lake in the lead, this sitcom was finally given the green light when Patricia Heaton came on board. No offense to Ms. Lake, but with a two-time Emmy winner as the star, The Middle probably has a better shot at breaking out of the pack. The Everybody Loves Raymond vet plays a harried, married mother of three in a quirky Midwestern family that will no doubt be compared with the Malcolm in the Middle clan, but clever dysfunctional slapstick never goes out of style.
