Hector Garcia was a Mexican-American doctor who served in World War II. After returning home he dedicated his life to helping Hispanic Veterans receive the benefits they deserved. He founded the American G. I. Forum.
On Feb. 23, 1836 Santa Anna took possession of San Antonio, and on March 6th, the thirteenth day of the siege, his forces breached the Alamo defenses. The Tejanos were defeated and all 189 men were killed.
Guy Gabaldon was a Mexican American U.S. Marine who at the age of 18, captured 1,500 Japanese during the Battle of Saipan in World War II. The U.S. Government awarded him the silver star and the Navy Cross and was nominated for the Medal of Honor.
In the 1960s and 1970s a generation of Mexican Americans, frustrated by persistent discrimination and poverty, find a new way forward, through social action and the building of a new Chicano identity.
